The California theme still seems a bit silly, given that the locals are most likely familiar with Cali's charms, and anyone travelling from somewhere else to actual California would be better off visiting the real thing...
The proposed individual attractions look OK, but the place is still founded on a pretty mundane concept. I guess the only other option would be to bulldoze the whole joint, so it does make sense, but you have to wonder if they're going to be haunted by the initial poor decisions forever.
Then again, given that Tomorrowland has nothing to do with the future (in the terrifying future, FISH...WILL...SING!) and Jack Sparrow has invaded the Old West, worrying about theming seems so 20th Century.
Disneyland's web site doesn't even break the attractions down into lands any more. The topics are now things like "Big Thrills", "Fun For Little Ones", and "Family Adventures".
Funny, I thought they were all supposed to be family adventures...

Ehh..i still think it will be a lot better than what it is right now, and to be honest it's still cool for some of us locals to go visit. Everytime I go I make it a point to stop there..especially for soarin and ToT.
This new upgrade should make it much more enjoyable from what the reports are saying. I guess we shall all see in the next 5 years.....

I'm pretty excited about the new pavillion, it should be very cool. I was very sad to read that the "CALIFORNIA" sign would be removed
(from Napolean's link to the OC Register map: http://www.ocregister.com/newsimages/mo ... ney_gp.gif)
I just hope they're talking about another "California sign" (let me know if I'm just reading it incorrectly, or if you've heard that they're not removing it). The new overhaul sounds good, although one thing that I had always hoped for DCA was a berm like Disneyland's. I think not being able to see out of the park greatly improves the magic you get in the park, and I think it would go a long way in making DCA a little more magical. I'm thinking mostly of the area behind Paradise Pier and Hollywood backlot / Tower of Terror where you can very easily see the convention center, non-resort hotels and residences. But I'm excited to see all these changes take place.

I was kind of hoping they were going to go with the proposed "Walt Disney's California Adventure" retheming. That way the park would be appealing to Californians and Tourists alike since it wouldn't be just a California Advnture, it would be California through the eyes of Walt Disney. The California theme still seems a bit silly, given that the locals are most likely familiar with Cali's charms, and anyone travelling from somewhere else to actual California would be better off visiting the real thing...
Looks like this isn't going to happen though, save for the new Main Street idea with the theater.

Amen! I've been saying the same thing for years. DCA's problems stemmed from its initial, short-sighted concept. And it's true, there were only two options: bulldoze it or commit completely to the existing theme and build it with Disney's quality and detail. It seems the new plan will do just that. Still doesn't get me excited though. The proposed individual attractions look OK, but the place is still founded on a pretty mundane concept. I guess the only other option would be to bulldoze the whole joint, so it does make sense, but you have to wonder if they're going to be haunted by the initial poor decisions forever.

I know, I know, and I didn't say it was a -bad- film; I actually liked it okay. It just seems silly to me to make a land based on the weakest puppy in the litter, y'know? Though obviously they don't agree that it was weak, and the ideas they have seem reasonable enough (they work at WDW), and pretty well any addition to DCS is probably a step in the right direction. So more power to 'em.FlyingMouse wrote:You know what they call the person who finishes last in Med School?DisBeamer wrote:...not the least of which is I think that's Pixar's weakest film...

And sorry to say, my information is that the back parking lot is "TOAST"

D'oh!. I should have put a smiley at the end of that sentence. Sorry.DisBeamer wrote:I know, I know, and I didn't say it was a -bad- film; I actually liked it okay. I totally understand what you are saying, but have to disagree on it being the weakest film. But, hey, that's just me. And you are just you. That's why they make more than one film--so everyone will have a favorite!
Now that I think about it, I don't know how I would rank my Pixar favorites. I'll have to make a list now...

I've been reading through this post and maybe I missed it somewhere...when does the major construction begin? The plan looks nice. I hope it includes some shade trees as one of the things I don't like about DCA is how hot it is there. Afternoons in the summer are almost unbearable. (at least in my opinion) I wish they would put some sort of transportation between the two parks so that you don't have to exit one and then stand in a line to get in the other. Maybe a people mover between the two would be a good idea.?

They have already started some of it, but all of the work will be done over the next five years.disneylandmom wrote:I've been reading through this post and maybe I missed it somewhere...when does the major construction begin?

Oh I get that too - I said in my original comment it was just the weakest in my opinion. My nephew, I know, would also disagree with me (probably loudly, and while wearing a Lightning McQueen shirt..). I think your point, even if it was jokingly, was a good one though; even if I think Cars was Pixar's weakest film, Carsland is still leagues ahead of ... I dunno .. Home on the Range Land... or Cinderella 7 Land.FlyingMouse wrote:D'oh!. I should have put a smiley at the end of that sentence. Sorry.
