Don't know if MGM's is cooler since I've only been in California. But I thought DCA's totally rocked!!! The pre-show/atmosphere/effects were way cooler than I expected (having never been in Florida, of course) and the elevator ride was really scary.
Especially since you can see people falling from the top of the elevator shaft while you're walking up to the ride!

The great thing about MGM's TOT that is lacking at DCA, as several of you have mentioned, is the "4th dimension." I read an interview with one of the imagineers about their blue sky session for designing TOT. During the meeting, someone came up with the idea of an elevator that doesn't only travel vertically, but horizontally as well. Thus, at MGM, the elevator moves forward from the show shaft into the drop shaft, adding the element imagineering referred to as the "4th dimension." Anyone's first ride at TOT MGM is mindblowing because of that--you never expect an elevator to stop and roll forward through the open doors.
I've ridden both MGM's and DCA's TOT, and though I enjoyed both versions, in my opinion, the tower at Disney/MGM Studios is a superior attraction.

Curiousity killed the cat, Cheshire! Seriously, there is a mirror in which all of the elevator occupants can see themselves. The mirror gets all wavy, disappears, and then you suddenly shoot up and drop. At least that's what I remember. I've only been on it once, so I may have it a bit wrong.
Drop another coin in slot and I will tell you more.

So here's the deal from a CA resident that has never been on the one at WDW. It is so flippin awesome! I've watched specials on the travel channle about the one in Florida and it looks more exciting. But like I said I have never ridden it myself so for cali purists It's exciting and nerve racking!
I do stuff sometimes.
