What did it use to be?

In the Queue for Space Mountain, when you get outside on what seems to be an upper platform, there is a big space that looks like a stage or something use to be there. Does anyone know what it's used for??

There used to be an open-air stage there, below the platform where Honey I Shrunk the Audience is now. When you were in the queue for Space Moutain, you could look down onto the stage in the center part of that upper platform, where you see the blue stripes coming in toward the circle in the center. The perimeter part where you wait in line for Space Mountain was always there. They used to show 3D movies in that theater at night once it was dark enough. Then, when Captain EO was built (in the mid 80's I think), they turned the open-air stage into a theater. Part of the theater "sticks up" into part of the Space Mountain queue platform and is surrounded by planters.

Hmmm... Seems like they could use it for something now... Just seems like a big waste of space.... :) But thanks for the enlightenment :)

Is the Tomorrowland Terrace still there and do they still have live bands? That was always a highlight back in the 70's and 80's. Gettin' your groove on at the Tomorrrowland Terrace.

Definitely still there, and they still do the bands and now Jedi Training Academy is held there as well :)

Thanks Cap! This is something that I had no idea about! I never knew that there wasn't a theater there, and the open air stage sounds really cool!

Yes, they do! I love it when I'm standing in line for Autopia and I hear 80s music playing. It gets me all excited and wanting to go on the ride more.

One of the best bands that preforms is the 80z All Stars. My friends and I actually saw them play about two years before they debuted at Disney in Mexico. Played on the beach for about three hours on a stage made entirely of full kegs of beer. They're a really fun band, but it's always so weird to see them playing at Disneyland after the Mexico experiences :)

My son and I saw 80z all stars last summer and they were great.
It looks like for our trip this year they are going to have Stellar. Does anybody know anything about this group? I was really hoping for a repeat of 80z all stars.

The problem is the roof was built as just that - a roof. It wasn't designed to support the weight of the several hundred people who would gather up there for anything they built there - even simply extra SM queue. Sad short term thinking.
No one's gloomy or complaining while the flatware's entertaining.

I wish they would use this display to show some of the new space stuff, maybe a space telescope to perk interest, that would rotate randomly, displaying some of the guests in line on a big screen TV or something.

I would also like to see the roof of space mountain changed to include solar panels in the shape of a mountain again showing some unique inovation by Disney. :ariel:

That sort of worries me.... Is that why the queue stays to the outside of the building? Keep all the load on the edges? lol

That would be really cool. Maybe show that Disney is moving forward and going "green" :)

I seem to remember a couple of decades ago they had escalators going up to that 2nd level of SM. Does anyone else remember this or am I losing it? 'Cuz it's very likely that I'm losing it. :D
