Matt Ouimet Leaving Disneyland! :(

Post by indysoarin19 » Jul Tue 25, 2006 11:24 pm

According to several Disney sites, namely MousePlanet, Matt Ouimet is leaving Disney for a position at Starwood Hotels. Ed Grier from Walt Disney Attractions Japan is replacing Ouimet. The full press release is below:
Dear Team:

For the past seventeen years, my family and I have been part of something very special — we have been part of the larger Disney family. This week, that chapter of our lives ends as I've accepted the position of President, Hotel Group with Starwood Hotels and Resorts.

It has been a privilege to work with the extraordinary people who collectively make up our Cast. It has been an honor to watch your hard work come to life as ships were launched, resorts were opened and theme parks sprung up around the globe.

Representing you in the local community has been humbling and very rewarding. At every event I attended, someone — usually multiple people — told me their story of how one of our Cast Members made a difference in their lives.

It has been an honor to be a small part of the legacy that is Disneyland during the celebration of its 50th anniversary. From my office window, I can clearly see the Matterhorn, Space Mountain and the Tower of Terror — and I am certain my new office will have a much less compelling view. In a three minute walk I can enter Toontown and wander the Park. Most of the time I'm just enjoying watching our Guests and our Cast...and that is what I will miss most of all.

On a recent trip to Walt Disney Imagineering, I had the opportunity to look at the future of the Disneyland Resort through the lens of an Imagineer, and I left that session with a big smile on my face — but knowing that I'd have to watch this magic play out from a distance.

Please accept my sincere appreciation for everything you've done for our Guests, your fellow Cast Members and my family and me.

Disney Veteran Ed Grier Named President of the Disneyland Resort
BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 25, 2006--Ed Grier, a 25-year Disney (NYSE:DIS) veteran who most recently oversaw the company's operations of Tokyo Disney Resort, has been named President of the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, Calif., it was announced today by Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman Jay Rasulo.

Prior to his experience in Japan, Grier held executive positions at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida and Disneyland Resort Paris in France. In these positions, Grier oversaw park operations, led thousands of Cast Members and was responsible for the financial and operational performance of the parks.

In addition to his operations and management experience, Grier has held positions at Walt Disney World Resort related to finance and marketing. In the early 1990s, Grier served as a member of an expatriate team that was assigned to Paris for one year to increase awareness of the resort in European markets. While there, Grier was responsible for establishing the resort's marketing division and developing Pan-European marketing strategies.

Grier is a CPA and prior to joining The Walt Disney Company in 1981, he worked for Ernst and Young. He has a bachelor's degree in accounting from Duquesne University in Pennsylvania.

I have been naming him as the number one reason for the big turnaround the last few years.

I'm extremely disappointed that he is leaving. I was looking forward to several more years of his leadership, now we're back to uncertainty.

Uncertaintly? Grier's spent the last two years helping make Tokyo DisneySea one of the most amazing places on the planet! I'm stoked on the replacement, even if it is sad to see Matt go...

It is definitely a bummer to see Ouimet leave, as he truly did a great job. However, as Spaulo has stated, Grier was over at Tokyo Disneyland, where quality is commonplace.

I agree that Grier is an exciting choice as a replacement, but I wouldn't name him as the chief reason Disney Seas is what it is. I don't follow that park well enough to know what attractions he's opened there in the past 2 years, but I'm pretty sure the bulk of the park was created before he got there. Before that he was at MGM Studios in Florida for a long time. We'll have to check the dates, but I think he even got there after Rockin Rollercoaster was designed/opened.

Well now, I never claimed he was the "chief reason"... I claimed he'd spent his time "helping" the park.

I'm curious just how much Grier had to do with Tokyo Disney as well, remember, it's not owned/operated by Disney, but by the Oriental Land Company. The OLC is the one investing in the park, that's the reason they have some fantastic entertainment and attractions in their two parks. All you have to do is take a ride on their Pooh attraction and then compare it to the one at WDW or DL to really see the difference...

Still, I'm willing to see just what Grier brings to DLR. I've met Matt a few times and have to admit that he really saw just what Disneyland meant to the guests and cast who knew Disneyland from the "old days". I'm hoping that Grier can keep that momentum moving.

It's curious how many people are retiring, leaving, and being shifted around. I wonder if it all has something to do with the merger?

While reading this thread I figured Grier might bring some more great stuff into DLR but wwwrich reminded me that Ouimet was a great listener and people person. I've heard Matt would walk around the parks and possibly listen to guests concerns. Walt constantly did that. Disneyland didn't get where it is today by following the money but following the heart and the word of the people. I hope Grier keeps up with listening to guests and not the money.
