Android, Mac and Windows Subsonic Radio Player updates

Post by acp » Dec Mon 03, 2012 5:13 pm

It's a bit of an App Update day here at Subsonic Radio Towers today. We've got not one, not two but THREE app updates for you.

First up, the Subsonic Radio Player for Android has been updated to version 1.2. This version adds improvements to running in the background and adds a Status Bar and Notification Area icon for when the app is playing. This update has been sent to the Google Play store and should appear as an update on your device within the next few hours (at the time of writing, it hasn't appeared in the store yet). You can find out more about the Android app by visiting the Google Play Store page.

NOTE: Subsonic Radio Player for Android 1.4 has been released since the above was written. 1.4 is a minor update that corrects an issue with the status bar icon on Android 2.2 devices.

Next up, BleuLlama has updated the Subsonic Radio Player for Mac OS to version 1.8. This version adds support for the Dole Whip and Holiday streams and improves upon the stream URL fetching code. You can read more and download version 1.8 by visiting the Mac OS app's forum thread.

Finally, the Subsonic Radio Player for Windows has been updated to version 1.6. This version fixes a few minor bugs and adds a corrected application icon (because Pedantic Adam is Pedantic). You can download version 1.6 by clicking here.

As usual, let us know if you find any bugs or brokenness. Or just let us know that you like the apps :)

Enjoy!

The addition of the notification icon is great for the Android app. Now if there was a way to make it show what tune was playing that would be swell. Also a sleep timer would be nifty but that's not as important to me.

Track name info is on the todo list, but from what I can see so far the Android SDK's MediaPlayer library doesn't appear to offer a way of extracting that information. I'm still looking for ways around that.

A sleep timer should be doable. I think someone mentioned that idea before. I've added it to my perpetual todo list to look at for an update at some point.

Thanks for posting all the updates acp. I was actually going to compile everything and try to post this myself. We're all better off that you did it!

Time to update my Mac with the latest player...

Okay, first a disclaimer: I'm using a two and a half years or so old HTC Desire, so I'm pretty outdated. So, if it's just me, feel free to ignore it.
But I do have problems with the visibility of the icon in the Notification area because my notification bar is black and the icon is as well...You can make it out, but you have to look closely. But the status bar itself is a nice feature nevertheless :)

Bugger.

Basically, I expected at least one case of this. The thing is, there's varying rules for different versions of Android, and there's three different styles of status bar icon (which I've catered for), and four different resolutions for each style. I did cater for all those cases, but clearly did something wrong somewhere (although it worked in all the emulator instances I tried, honest!). My suspicion is that some handset manufacturers "tweaks" to Android may change the colours around, which may break things. Or I've done something wrong (which is probably more likely!) If you're interested (which you're probably not!), this is the documentation for Android status bar icons :)

Can you let me know what version of Android you're running? That way I can see if I've messed up somewhere while putting it together :)

Ahh, but it still took him a year and a half to notice it in the first place though ;)

For the time being, it won't show up in Amazon's app store (mainly because I've not submitted it there, but also because I've not got a Kindle Fire to test with and also haven't even looked at the Kindle Fire SDK yet).

There are ways to install the Google Play store on the Kindle Fire, but I believe they're rather involved and require rooting the device first, so probably aren't really recommended.

It's something I can look into, but it probably won't be for a while yet.

Thanks Andy. I had to do a bunch of crazy steps to get the aldiko reader ap on my Kindle Fire so I could read ebooks from my own company on it.

If you want someone to test when you eventually get around to it, I'm willing. And in the meantime, I've got my iPhone so all is well.

Is anyone else having issues with the Holiday & Dole channels?? Every time I try to listen to these channels it keeps on saying "Reconnecting". Someone please help! It's the holiday season and I'm missing out on my sweet Disney Christmas tracks!!!

Sure thing:
Android version 2.2.2, Build number 2.29.405.14
Ancient history, but there's nothing new for the Desire. (which makes me think that it isn't worthwhile for you to fix that...)

The color of the status bar is pretty much the color the documentation lists (yes, I read it!) as fill gradient for Android 2.2 and earlier...
