Subsonic Radio - Now on your Android device

Post by acp » Nov Fri 16, 2012 4:38 pm

One question we've been asked a lot here at SSR Towers is if we've got an Android app. Well now, we have.

The Subsonic Radio Player for Android version 1.1 is now available free from our new Google Play Store page.

Image

The app will run on devices running Android 2.2 and higher (which, according to the Google Play store is 2035 devices!).

If you have any problems with the app, get in touch with acp via the email address on the Google Play page, or pop into the chat. Alternatively, you can send your feedback using this form.

My thanks go to Cory for the graphics and to Rodders and subsonic for testing.

acp, thanks so much for making this. Now, I can finally reply to feedback emails saying "YES, we have one!" instead of "Dude, stop complaining, we run this site for free and don't have a dev to make one"

Amazing turn-around time as well! Works great for me.

Is there anyway we could put a link to the apps on the main site page? It definitely would make replying to those emails a lot easier when you have a set link. Right now the only access to the apps is through searching the forums.

Inserts foot into mouth...

I guess that is what happens when the streams are all on my iTunes and I just go direct to the forums.

I think you need to learn the difference between left and right, sir ;)

Technically it took three evenings, they were just non-consecutive. ;)

Nice work acp, it was a rigorous testing process but it was worth it ;)
1980, 2000, 2005 and 2008 all had plenty of magic. Hoping for a bit more in 2010.

Yep, this is definitely exciting. As an Android owner, I've wanted this a while. I've been telling my friends!

+1! I also have always been an android owner and always had to use a "3rd party" app like TuneIn to get the feeds, but then half the time it switched between request and scheduled... so glad to have a dedicated app. Thanks!

Nice one (again), acp! :)
A bit more minimalistic than the iPhone app, especially since there is no "Now playing" info, but I can live with that - while being on the go, a play button and the stream list really is all I need.
The design of the stream selection bar is a bit screwed up, but judging from your screenshots that's because my device is old and ugly :D

Things like Now Playing etc are in the list of future updates, but as I won't have much free time over the next couple of weeks I thought it was better to release a working but simpler app than make you wait a while longer since I knew there were a number of people who wanted an android app. That, and I wanted a player for my shiny new nexus 7 ;)

As for the selection list, that's quite probably down to earlier versions of Android. I did note when testing the app that older versions don't have as pretty dropdown lists as the newer versions. If you send me a screenshot, I can take a look, but if it is due to the earlier version of Android, there's probably not much I can do.

I've honestly been quite surprised by the number of downloads the app has had. I know we've had a few requests for an android app over the years, but it's been more popular than I anticipated. I don't have numbers for the iPhone app, but adding the numbers for the android and windows apps together scares me slightly :)
