SR Asking for donations for the second time ever

Post by subsonic » May Thu 17, 2012 2:50 pm

Don't blow this out of proportion but Subsonic Radio is asking for donations. The reason I don't want to blow this out of proportion is because I've felt guilty that this site hasn't had much love from me in a while. There hasn't been much work done on the frontside of things in ages. On the backside of things we (and I mostly mean rdeacon) are constantly trying to keep things running. People have noticed outages and such. Subsonic Radio is held together by a lot of gum and duct tape. We run this site on a very very small budget, depending on some awesome users to donate decent bandwidth (man, I miss Addlema's bandwidth donation), which results in crazy server setups.

Currently, we run SAM Broadcaster with one license (which rdeacon and myself paid for); We want to upgrade all our streams to use SAM Broadcaster but at $300 a licence I feel it's a little much from our own pockets. As I've had requests to "help out the site" and "how can I donate" which I always refuse by stating, "I love keeping this site free for everybody. Your thanks is enough. (Though, you can always hang out in the chat more)" I figure it's time to leverage that a little.

I'm not even going to share this post on twitter/facebook. Just a simple link to donate via Paypal here in the forums. Any amount is appreciated and the donation button won't be up for long.

A thank you in advance from Subsonic and Team SR!

EDIT:
My expectations were exceed! Thank you everybody for your donations. I'm closing it down. And now we can do a few back-end upgrades! (And some front-end eventually!)

Just wanted to say that asking for a donation is nothing to be ashamed of. I think all the hard work that is done by everyone involved in setting the streams up, developing the website, finding and uploading the tracks for us to enjoy, etc shouldn't go unacknowledged. Every now and then a 'thank you' is fine to receive, but in my opinion, when funds are needed in order to improve the site experience we all love so much, I, for one, have no problem sending my small part in as a way of saying 'keep up the great work, and thanks'. Also, I realize not everyone is in a position to send anything in at all, and that is totally fine. No disrespect to those who can't.

Here's to hoping you (the site) get's what you (the site) need so that improvements can be made and we all can enjoy it even more! Again, thanks for everything you and all the other guys do so that I can listen every day at work (and on the way home)! If there's anything else I can do to help around here, please let me know!

Have you used it? I remember looking into this a LONG time ago. I don't think it does requests is the issue.

EDIT: After looking at it, yeah it doesn't seem to. I wouldn't see why one would use this over winamp and installing the shoutcast DNAS & plugin.

I am actually glad that you're asking for donations. When I first started listening to Subsonic I was listening a LOT and searched the site high and low for a way to donate and couldn't find one. I go in phases and at times I listen a ton, other times not at all. I think I'm easing into a listening phase again.

Anyway, thanks for all that you do. I hope you get what you need to keep everything running smoothly.

Done! Sorry it can't be more, but I'm hoping little amounts help add up to big amounts! I would truly miss this site if it ever went away :(
Long live Subsonic Radio :D

Let's see, I've gotten to listen to SR at home, work, on my iPhone any time I want for the last 7 years and you only asked for donations one other time that I can remember. It's a no-brainer! Of course I will donate! Don't ever be ashamed to ask.

Thank you everybody who's donated so far. It's actually been better than I hoped! Also, it's great motivation for me to continue to work on the site. :) I actually have been putting in a few hours a week coding again. I hope it's worth it.

Donation done! Thanks for all you do to keep this site going - in fact, it's the least we can do. Keep up the GREAT work.
