I went to request this afternoon, and the queue was over four hours long. Even with the new system, there are going to be times when it's hard to request. Luckily, you all have such good taste, it's usually a pleasure to listen to your selections!

I believe the system was put in place to avoid the 2:30 blocks of playlist dominance. Even though you feel that no one is requesting at that exact time, does not mean that 5 minutes from then the same will be true... I know there have been times where I've looked at the Now Playing page, seen 2 or 3 things in there, and once the page refreshed (either automatically or manually) just a few minutes later, there's 10 more tracks added. people request 24 hours a day, that's why the restrictions are set fpr 24 hours a day.Jacca5660 wrote:Can this be suspended on early (9AM) Sunday mornings (EASTERN)? There is usually no one playing anything then and I play about 2:30 worth of music. I drink my coffee, read the paper, and listen to SUB.

I think this system is just encouraging people now to block up an hour at a time!jbvenn wrote:I went to request this afternoon, and the queue was over four hours long. I know we're still testing it out, but it looks like it is actually having an adverse affect to me as well. The que seems to be longer than normal since the plan has been implemented. Tragedy of the Commons anyone? The new policy is actually artificially lowering supply (read: request play), and it encourages people to gobble up all their resources (one hour blocks) as much as possible. See, Econ does have real world applications!
I like the idea. As the station gets more popular I'm sure there will be times when the que gets quite long, but even when it is and I can't request something while I have time to listen I still enjoy what others are requesting and sometimes it's something I haven't heard in a while so it's all good!!

Yea, I noticed the other afternoon the queue was still quite long(at least 3 hours). But even with this system in place, I'm not sure if there's a way to get around it. During peak times, it's usually not one person hogging the stream, but just a build up of several people putting requests in.
Although, we're still in the testing stage, so I'm willing to give this a chance.

I think it's working as planned. The idea was to allow more of a variety people to make requests, not necessarily to reduce the average length of the queue. Even though the queue is 6 hours long today, it's comprised of requests from many different people, not just a handful.

I would agree that the point of the limit was to prevent one user from blocking up the stream, not to discourage requests. It's a good sign that the requests are busy. And I have seen a wider array of people requesting, so that is encouraging. Like we said this this a test, so we will continue to monitor it.

well, some days are always randomly busy on requests. at any rate, it sure isn't any worse than the last few weeks, and now in not-as-busy hours, one user doesn't block up all the requests. so i'm happy with it. i mean, if long-time users are taking up an hour now, imagine if there was no limit...it could be a lot worse (and it has heh)casrin wrote:I was just thinking of how many "complained" they couldn't just plop a request in and immediately hear it, is all. They sure cannot now!

Yes, there's definitely a misconception on what this system is supposed to do. It's not supposed to reduce the requests that go in, but allow more users to get their requests in. We are still testing this. Nothing is set in stone yet. There's still a number of ways we can take this. So far, the diversity is nice again.
