Deacon on Disney - Presidents

Since itâ€™s the time of year where candidates are making speeches and generally lying to the American public, I thought itâ€™s a good time to look at the President and CEO of Disney, Robert Iger.

Incase you missed it Disney has extended Igerâ€™s contract thru 2013. Its really only a 3 year extension since his previous contact was scheduled to expire in 2010. The new contract guarantees him a base salary of at least $2 million a year through 2013. He also is eligible for annual bonuses of $10 million or more.

The board feels Iger has done very well for the company and its stockholders.
â€œBob is a talented and visionary leader under whom Disney has posted increases in growth and profitability that have consistently exceeded expectations," chairman John Pepper Jr. said. "We are confident he will continue to lead this extraordinary company and talented management team to new levels of creative and business success."
Iger has been riding a wave of success since taking the helm from Eisner in 2005. Disney has posted record revenues during Igerâ€™s tenure. According to Disney, â€œIn fiscal 2007, the company's revenue rose five percent to $35.3 billion. Net income per share for the year excluding certain items was up 24% to $1.92.â€

It's funny. I knew who Eisner was, of course, but for the life of me, I couldn't have told you who the present President of Disney is now (until reading this, of course). I guess that means he is either unremarkable or doing a great job and keeping a lower profile. It sounds like the latter.

That's probably a good thing.

in terms of the Eisner years... Iger has only been at it for a lil over a year (I think)

DCS = typo hahha

I'm not impressed with Iger, but he doesn't appear to be the Antiwalt that Eisner was, so it's definitely an improvement.

That said, Disney needs to be run by a man with real vision, preferably a lunatic...or at least someone bigger than life. I'm not a huge fan of Steve Jobs, but that's the kind of guy who needs to be in charge. Someone unwilling to roll with the status quo, and who is not only unafraid to make waves, but will do so loudly and proudly.

He needs to be able to simultaneously think big and sweat the small stuff...or at least hire the right people to do those things for him. He needs the ego to take bold steps, but not so much ego that he can't cop to a major screw-up and learn from it.

It's a tall order.

Iger doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who takes big chances, and while that might keep the stock price stable and such, it doesn't bode well for the theme parks.

Second, Thats what Disney gets for hiring someone from Universal!

Iger is great because he realizes that is is the rides and themeing that draw the crowds. For example in the new Carsland that will go into DCA, they are forgoing the fancy eateries and focusing on the rides themselves. I think that is a better strategy than just putting a bunch of shops and restaurants in the park and thinking that makes a good place to visit.

No, like me. They'd only have to pay me 1 million a year with up to 5 million in bonuses. I'm a steal.

Too funny I was going to say Johnny Depp too, then I thought someone like Jerry Bruckheimer or Tim Burton, would be an interesting choice....LOL
Are there even people like Walt that have his visionary outlook existing in the world today??
