ISP Limiting Bandwith? - A little request

Post by subsonic » Feb Tue 06, 2007 1:06 pm

I fear that my ISP has limited my bandwidth, hopefully it's just "slow internet" problems. All the streams are choppy, so I've needed to turn off the scheduled stream for right now. I think Subsonic Radio is getting bigger than I can handle.

Sorry for the inconvience.

Things are not looking good. :(

Update
Yesterday seemed just as bad. If you guys keep buffering and are getting choppy streams, the low bandwidth is the reason.

Update - 2/12/2007 8:12:59 AM
Mornings and evenings seem to be more stable. I'm starting to think my ISP is running out of bandwidth during these hours. I run the main feeds and track database out of my house. I'd really like to get the site and streams onto the same server. If anybody has good deals on dedicated servers at an ISP please let me know.

Update 2/14/07
It appears as if the issue is with the 128k stream. The 64k and 24k streams are fine and not buffering. We suggest you use those until we solve the 128k buffering issue.

I'm sorry I wish there was something I could do to help out  The company I work for doesn't do the streams that you need for this station or I would be glad to help out.

Did you ever imagine that so many of us would be on here with you to enjoy your station? This is by far the best Disney station online! You're passion has made this station as great as it is!

Oh, I wish that I could help in some way, too, although my expertise with this kind of stuff is fairly nonexistent - LOL! You'd probably run in the other direction! Hang in there, help will find it's way to you somehow.

I agree with bostoncq -- this is a fabulous station! I can't imagine all of the time and effort it must take to keep it running smoothingly, not to mention the hours/days/months that went into the recent upgrades. Thanks for all that you do to make our days so much more enjoyable.

Sub doesn;t run the streams. He runs the player that plays on the streams. The streams are hosted by a couple of users (Disneyfan2, Addlema).

It is a great station. I've been recommending the site to a few hardcore Disney fans who I know will be listening 24/7, so I hope reinforcements are on the way. I bet now you wish you were getting some kickback on those t-shirt sales huh?

Sub sends one stream for each type of stream we have here. So he sends out 2 128k, 1 64k, and 1 24k.

Then a couple of us act as shoutcast relayers and provide the rest of the bandwidth needed.

I provide both 128k streams and I think DisneyFan2 provides the bandwidth for the 64k and 24k streams.

We are look at alternatives for sub right now. Never fear. The crack Subsonic admin team is on it.

I can't speak for subsonic here. But I think the general consensus is that we will always do this for free.

We don't, and (probably) will never take money for the site, as we do not want to give Disney any more reason to shut us down. If they see us making money off their product, they'd have us down in a second.

Might this have had something to do with it?
Powerful hacker attack hits Internet-traffic computers
The Associated Press
Tucson, Arizona | Published: 02.07.2007

WASHINGTON — Hackers briefly overwhelmed at least three of the 13 computers that help manage global computer traffic Tuesday in one of the most significant attacks against the Internet since 2002.
Experts said the unusually powerful attacks lasted as long as 12 hours. Behind the scenes, computer scientists worldwide raced to cope with enormous volumes of data that threatened to saturate some of the Internet's most vital pipelines.

Yeah I just heard about that this morning on the way into work. All 13 computers rerouted the info around the affected computers so nothing really got corrupted. Although it does bring up the point about how safe the internet itself is.

IT has nothing to do with that attack. Let me also say that the media is blowing that attack way out proportion. There is almost 0 way an attack like that would do anything to harm the interwebs.

uhu huh addlema said interwebs :)

But he is right, the web is quite robust, and that type of attack would not cause the issue sub was having. Sounds like it was an issue with his ISP only. Lets hope it was a temp issue. Even so we should look into alternatives, so this type of situation does not happen again.

I didn't mean to turn a profit, but just to offset some of the personal costs to yourselves... can't that be done?

Apparently not. According to Sub himself, if he were to sell merchandise and use the profits for himself, or even to support the station, Disney might get mad. They might think he would be using their music for his own profit. Not worth taking the chance.
WDW History: I've always stayed offsite (my own house), because I've always lived in Orlando. But since I've become a Cast Member, I've thought about staying onsite.

Also if this station were to turn a profit I would have to shut down my relays.
