Exactly. That's what I'd like to do. I want to help out in any way I can... :D

Hmmm, I have 384 up and fixed IP, plus a spare pc that could be used.

Will you need access to this pc? Whats the OS you will need?

Let me know Sub.
(I sense unlimited request in my future....or atleast some additional brownie points)

I'll probably put this in a news post. But for now, it's here.

Basically, you need semi decent upload. Something like Rich has at 384 up.
Well, that's for the 64k stream.
It works like this.
You take up a slot when you relay the stream.
Every listener uses 64k.
To host 5 listeners at 64k you need 384 up.
64k to connect to the server...
320k to hose 5 streams...
=
384k
You also want a little buffer so you can still view websites and such.
This will leave you with 4 listeners to leave you with 64k to surf.
When you connect to the server, you fill up a slot on that server.
So, essentially, you've only added 3 extra slots for people to listen to.

It takes a lot of bandwidth. But, if 10 people host 4 listeners each, subtracting 10 for the slots filled that's still added 30 listeners thus more than doubling my current total of 64k listeners.

As far as software. All you need is the shoutcast server and a config file. If people are interested, I can make zip file of these and all you have to do is unzip and run.

Thanks for the support my fellow mouse freaks.

Could this be set up so that people could contribute just while there computer is on and could turn our computer off without killing the whole system, or would we have to leave our system on all the time?

You need to check with your ISP to know what plan you have.
Or

Sort of. If you add 5 listeners, and you shut down your computer, those 5 people will connect to another relay or the source. BUT, if all those stream are filled, those users are out of luck.

ALL
An FYI. There is a Shoutcast server for *NIX. I believe it's the same config file, but I don't know if you need to build the exe or not.

looks like I've got 2216 down and 240 up. If that's good, let me know how to set up the relay (if an exe needs to be built or whatever). I'll be home all day on Thursday and Friday this week, so you could IM me or something and let me know what to do...

Question:

I have like 250 up. By my calculations it would appear that there would be a net INCREASE (though only slight) in the number of slots available if I were to set up a relay, but you said that we need something like 384. Would you like us to refrain from setting up a relay if we don't have 384 up, or would you like any help you can get? Thanks sub.

Because it takes up a slot on the main server, and the fact that I don't have a way (yet) of linking to the cluster. I don't think it's worth it to put up a 3 or less listener relay. With 250 up, you could host more 24k streams though.
