Buffering Question

Post by jkm8113 » May Fri 06, 2005 11:30 am

When the music stops and the message pops up saying

Network stalled, rebuffering, or something to that affect. Is that on my end or the other end?

I am home where I can list, but this is happening a lot right now, and I don't want to request during a time it is all broken up. Should I just wait a while, or do I shutdown and open it all up again. Hope I made sense.

That's hard to determine, and it could be any number of factors. Possible things to try include:

1. Rebooting
2. Picking a lower streaming rate if you are on one of the higher streams
3. Increasing the buffer size

Are you creating a lot of other online traffic at the same time?

The buffering could happen from either end (the server acting up or your buffer settings are set too low). What player are you using to connect? What's your isp speed (dsl, cable, dial-up, etc)? What stream are you connecting to (24k, 56k, or 64k)? All of these have effects on the quality of the stream and the buffering.

using dsl and selected 64K

It seems to have settled down now. It was breaking up very badly a little while ago.

It seems to me that over the past 2 weeks or so, i've had more problems with rebuffering the stream then I have the whole time I've been listening to the station. Is there some change that could be causing this?

I'll second that - I never used to have problems with buffering [using WinAmp and any of the streams] and now I'm getting it a lot...

There's got to be a reason for it. Maybe it just the fact that the site is growing so fast and more people are listening.

I really don't know. I'm going to reboot the server.

I've had the same issues with rebuffering on my Mac using iTunes. I do update the iTunes whenever there is a new update. Today, when I was stepped away from the computer it didn't just rebuffer the channel changed streams from the live stream to The Horizons Stream. When I came back to the computer I closed iTunes and reopened it and restarted the stream and it was back on tract. Have no idea how it changed streams by itself.

Buffering can happen for alot of reasons. Most applications also have the ability to increase the buffer size. This will help stop the application from rebuffering.
