Sure does. Dialup is too darn slow. I've gone from dial up (56K) to DSL and now onto a cable modem. And I LOVE IT!

One exception here... Dialup is better than no connection at all!

DSL rules... Dialup drools! When I had dialup, I had a second phone line dedicated for the computer. Now I don't need it. So switching to DSL ended up being cheaper. A no-brainer. As James Earl Jones says; "Why don't you have it?".

since I don't want to delete this thread can you state why you think it sucks in the forum rues it says you can't do just emoticons you need to contribute. Thanks

Also I hate Dial-up because it just takes to long. In this day in age no one should be paying for dial-up

DSL = laaaame... cable modem is better. Especially around here, where the difference is 384kbps vs. 1.5mbps, and a 12-month contract vs. month-to-month service...

Oh yeah, and dialup sucks too.

I'm sure you're right, but I don't have cable. I have DirecTV. They do offer DirecWay, which is satellite broadband. I looked into that a few years ago, but it required a substantial investment in new equipment. I understand it is not very good anyway.

Cable is by far better. I remember when I went back to dialup for a little bit after living on cable, its like having someone take away your phone and replace it with a telegraph.

I agree with those for Cable... I've had it now for 2 years and it's gone out about 3 times, and that's only because of server upgrades. never had any other problems.

Slap me!

I can't say anything bad about dial-up as it served me well for about ten years. Though I used to say, "Who needs broadband? All I need the 'net for is e-mail and the web." But toward the end it got to where the sites were so grahically intensive that it'd take forever just to load a doggone page! I used to wait 20+ minutes for an mp3 to download, but I was chatting on IRC and surfing at the same time, so it wasn't so bad. Back then I'd wait 20 minuntes for a free song. :D

That's an ignorant comment. It depends what you are trying to do. Also, cable modem is shared within the area.

Cable modem CAN have better download speeds than regular DSL. That's about it.

When a lot of users in an area have cable I've seen download speeds/ping times drop signifigantly during peak useage periods (5pm -9pm). Also, cable doesn't have nearly the upload that DSL can have. I run SR off of DSL which has 3000 down / 768 up. It was because of this DSL deal in my area that I decided to start SR.

Now, I wish I could get fiber :)

Got cable installed at my new apartment yesterday and it's been great for me.

I think we should all go to: http://www.dslreports.com/stest and run a speed test. Post the results and your type of connection here. It will be fun to see what people are getting. I will run it when I get home from work this evening.
