Very pretty ~ the water looks so clear too!

Wow. Looks different than when I was there in 2005. I remember the less intact ship more for some reason but it has been a while! Cold but clear water! And Tobermory is a nice little town too.

Nice pics! It is amazing how well preserved some of those shipwrecks are!

I think the preservation is primarily owing to the cold temperatures.

That was my first though, and I almost mentioned it, but then I thought about the shipwrecks in the tropics that seem to be preserved so well too.

Well here's my very untrained thought process: The cold temperatures don't exactly welcome microorganisms, and aren't exactly hospitable to them. Thus, what decay of organic matter does happen, happens slowly. Not to mention, wooden sailing vessels were often treated with pine pitch or other sealants like tar, that would make them inaccessible to what little critters could actually get a bite.

Now, when you talk about tropical waters, the possibility of a lack of oxygen is what I would first think about. When waters are warm, life fluorishes quickly, and then dies out quickly, too, because gases don't dissolve as well in warm water as they do in cold water. So, while cold water has lots of oxygen, it's too blasted cold for the critters to hang about. And while warm water is a friendlier temperature, there isn't as much oxygen available for metabolism, and then they die.

That's my line of thinking. Maybe someone with more knowledge than rudimentary chemistry and biology can weigh in on this pressing matter.

That all sounds pretty plausible to me...and any explanation that includes "critters" makes me giggle so even if it isn't right, it works for me!

Very cool! The fresh/cold water helps preserve the wrecks in the Great Lakes. Also depends on how deep they sunk and the waves etc....Wrecks in salt water are eaten away by the salt. That is my understanding anyway. Speaking of diving...I'm in severe withdrawel!

Made a dive trip to the Philippines a couple weeks ago. Nice to get some warm weather! The resort and diving was great! The travel there and, especially, back was....an adventure. I'm still working on getting the shots online and have a video to make but here's a couple shots to help warm you up!

It's unfortunate, but you can now take pictures of Lion fish off the coast of Florida!! People released them into the wild and they have become a plague!

Yeah, I hear they are all over the Caribbean though I haven't been there since the outbreak. I understand the are reasonably good eating though! Hopefully something will take a liking to them and get things bank in balance.
