Just wondered if anyone has heard about this?

I'm totally stoked for this, but in all honesty, I've seen the movie a bunch of times and, like the quote says, it's not nearly as good as I remembered it as a kid. Mostly, it's boring. But man, those animated portions with Brer Rabbit are incredible.

Anyway, just thought some of you Splash Mountain fans might be interested!

Yeah, same here. But it would be nifty to see how the package comes together. My vote is for an introduction from Danny Glover. Hopefully, Disney uses it as an opportunity to show the black community that the theme of blacks perservering during hardship overshadows that of theme of slavery. The tales of Uncle Remus are some of the best in the history of "children" books, in my opinion.

I've never seen the movie before, I used to have the book that was just about Brer Rabbit and the Tar baby plus Splash mountain. I was born about the time Eisner came to work for Disney (that year actually) so they would have not relased it at that time.

But that is just Beast I hope it's true.

I've wanted to see this movie ever since I first went on Splash Mountain I-don't-know-how-long-ago... but Jim Hill's been wrong about stuff before...

This is an impressive film considering it came out in 1946. The cinematographer is Greg Toland, the director of photography for Citizen Kane. Plus, you won't find that many movies in color from that year.

My first reaction is "Woot!"

But then, "Fall of '06?? darn, that's a long way off." It's probably been twenty years since I last saw it on the Disney Channel, back when they used to play classic Disney films, Disney documentaries, etc. Now it seems like it's all a bunch of series geared toward kids and teens. What about the adults??

I hope they really do release this film. I don't think it's insulting at all in this PC world. I think Uncle Remus is an enduring character that tries to make a better world out of what he is given. I'm sorry, but if you find him insulting you need to really take a look at it. It's rather inspiring actually to see that people have risen to such greater levels. Uncle Remus should not be any more insulting than the slave in Gone with the Wind, or half the rappers and black comics today.

I was actually blown away when I was watching the special features on the Alice in Wonderland Special Editon DVD. If you watch the featurette with the magic mirror, they show a pretty good size clip from Song of the South.

I am excited about this release. This is a great movie that was very ahead of it's time technologically that is, perhaps not the content necessarily.

Wow, that's great! Is it my imagination, or does anyone remember that movie being re-released and shown in theaters sometime in the mid-eighties? I have a very foggy recollection of seeing it on the big screen?!?!

It was re-released in theaters in 1972, but I don't know of any time it hit the theaters in the 80's (I definitely would've remembered). I remember seeing it as a kid on television, though. But that still would've been in the 70's.

Added: I stand corrected! There was a re-release in '86.

Hey, thanks! I could have sworn I saw it! I can't wait for my kids to see it. We've read the story to them a bunch of times and have a record from way back with the story and songs combined-they LOVE it! Don't really understand all the controversy...

I actually saw the movie in a theater in Tennessee when I was in college in 1980 in a budget theater. And I actually have an .avi version of it, but the quality is pretty bad. I can't wait for the DVD to come out. My kids have seen it and even though the live action portions are a bit slow they just fast forward to the next cartoon brier rabbit story!

Confession - we actually have this on VHS and it has to be one of the most boring movies of all time. The animation parts are cool but it's painful to get to those parts! Even my kids thought it was a snoozefest - but we all totally dig Spalsh Mountain!
