I could possibly be buried while still wearing my watch! Being a pilot means the watch is one of the most valuable instruments in the cockpit. I now have one of those set-to-the-bureau-of-standards digitals, with a solar backup for the battery. All of my friends who don't wear a watch are always asking me for the time

I feel lost without my watch. It was one of those things, when growing up, that showed you were responsible. I have many watches and rarely leave the house without one on. I guess it's a generational thing. It's also for me a status symbol! How many people have a backwards running Goofy watch?

I am constantly giving time estimates to my next fuel stop to my dispatcher. She makes sure we don't do anything stupid (or at least not as stupid as running out of fuel).hockeygirl wrote:Why is a watch one of your most important items?
I remember my instructor saying he could fly across the USA with only a watch, compass and chart. He probably could!

Cool! A fellow boater!hockeygirl wrote:...I used to do the same thing when I was out on the boat....
As a boater, I understand the importance of a good watch, for much the same reason as a pilot. If you know how many g.p.h. your boat uses at various r.p.m, you can use your watch to keep track of time spent running so you know roughly how much fuel you're using. Boat fuel gauges are notoriously inaccurate.
Of course, they have newer technology for tracking fuel consumption, but old-school stuff can come in handy if you lose your electronics. Just sayin...
One of my favorite watches has all the numbers represented by nautical signal flags. Way cool....
