Skype

Post by js3901 » Mar Sun 15, 2009 11:58 pm

anyone here use Skype? I know it's mentioned in a couple of posts on the boards here, but no one has gone into any great detail about it. here is the chance.

I'm considering downloading this, as I have a compatible headset for my laptop, and recently re-found this application. I'm not a big user of phones (I own a cell phone but barely use it, and I used to work in telephone customer service - so I know what's it's like to be on the phone ALL DAY). is it worth downloading and taking up space on my hard drive? or is it something I should just skip?

thoughts?

BTW, for those that don't know, apparently they have this program for several OS, including:
Windows
Mac OS X
Linux
and Windows Mobile (for cell phones running WM)

The only times I've ever heard of Skype is from Oprah and from when QuickGold does his live chats -he tends to forget to turn the sound down so you hear the bloop bloop noises in the background. From what I hear, it's something neat to have but I'm unsure of the amount of harddrive space it requires.

the installer is 2.2MB, while the installed program apparently takes up about 26.0 MB

If you ever want to see skype in Heavy action just go to http://live.twit.tv This is one of the video podcast I watch/listen to and if you can't see them use it there just go to http://www.odtv.me (which seems to be down at the moment) and download one of the episodes where they use it.....which is any of them. They have what is called Skypesarus, let me upload a picture of it:

That is Skpesarus dead center in the back. It is comprised of 4 netbooks and four monitors. It started out as a joke and then someone actually figured out how to do it.....I love it.

Skype is a online calling service. Basically you can call anyone from anywhere in the world from your computer and it is free. Also they have video streaming for video conferencing.

I first learned about this program while watching a flash cartoon called The Website is Down: Sales Guy VS. Web Dude. It's a humorous look at what IT/Tech guys go through when the sales dept has no idea what they're talking about. It's also installed on my PSP, yet I do not have a headset for that, as yet...

We have some good friends that moved to the opposite side of the world from here to Perth, Australia. Even though there is a 12-hour time difference, we use Skype regularly to stay in touch with them.

We also bought my in-laws a camera/mic combo for their home computer to stay in touch. We've yet to use it.

I do like Skype. Very easy to download, install and use.

I use it frequently during the shows I put together for a College station I'm a volunteer deejay for with a friend who lives out in Tampa.
Friendships are a blessing. Don't waste it on people who can't appreciate it.

Skype is great if you live overseas. My nephew uses it all the time to talk to his parents. He's living in Thailand right now.

That seems cooky. It's a phone - why would it need skype? :p I know, I know, the whole "free calls" angle which a phone wouldn't necessarily have. Still seems weird.

Of course, my cell barely makes phone calls reliably so what do I know?
