for those who hate phishing scams

I present you with Scam Baiters. It's a site/foum where they actually respond to those annoying scam emails (the ones where they say you've won money in some foreign lottery and such). They actually waste the scammer's time, so they do less targeting of innocent civilians. Some of it is VERY funny (like when they sent 3 80 lb boxes of garbage to someone who thought they were buying laptops with a fraudulent check and made the scammer pay in cash for the shipping).

the site is worth a quick look through (the parts you can see without registering) if you've got some time to kill and are tired of those email scams coming into your mailbox...

I always delete any sort of spam or anything that looks ridiculous. I never fall for any sort of junk like that because after watching the news so much, I learn to never trust those things. This is a handy tool for me to try out because my email, which never got spam before, is starting to get it now.

The spam I hate the most is the emails that say, "I would like to transfer 5 million dollars to the United States and I need your help." I just don't understand how people are stupid enough to fall victim to these. People must be falling into these traps because they keep sending them out. I just can't fathom this...

I work for a local gov't office with a police dept in our email system. We get so much of that spam here....I delete about 30 a day. I've inherited money, won lotteries, job scams, etc. There are also open your credit report files that contain viruses. We also get the increase your stamina and size emails too!

I have about 3 e-mail address' that are soley for spam. If I have to place my e-mail into a site for some reason but I am unsure of the security of the site or if the site is selling information for money I use one of my "spam collection e-mails" one account gets over 50 a day or used to I haven't checked it in a while.

Thanks for posting this up JS. Ive fallen victim to a very elaborate scam about a year and a half ago involving craigslist. I wont go into all the details but to make a long story short i was scammed out of a lot of money. Its the worst feeling in the world and i cant begin to explain the emotions that one goes through when theyve fallen victim.

Sites like this are very helpful for the very reason JS said. They occupy these scammers time almost completely to the point where they dont have time to get actual victims. I referred my case to one of these sites and they worked on the guy who scammed me and it felt great to have that support.

yeah, this site is great. the owner does alot of "Freight Scams", which usually involve people in other countires (ALOT in Nigeria) who order goods (like laptops) and he sends them a load of junk (like a broken washing machine ora large box around 200LBS full of nothing but sand or garbage). the best part is, the scammers have to pay for the shipping, and usually in CASH (due to high fraud in those areas - who would have thought?)

All I can say is they get what they deserve. Nothing makes me sicker then these sorts of scams and garbage that flies around the internet. Some of these scams can get really good to getting you I might add. HAd it not been for Firefox, I would have fallen into one for Paypal. "they" sent me an email telling me to update my profile information by clicking the link on the page. It was 2am and I clicked it, but Firefox stated it was a phishing scam site ww.pay.pal instead of paypal... pretty sneaky... and sad.

Oh yea...some are so good that thay make a web page to look identical to the actual paypal log in site. I guess it helps if you are able to identify a fake site from a real site by looking at the address bar. The web address is usually a good indicator if its real or not. Almost always these sites will never ask you to update your profile information by email. That should be indicator number one!

419eater.com has some of the most hilarious accounts of scam baiting I've ever seen. Be sure to check "The Trophy Room" for some of the funniest stuff you'll ever see in your life.

The classic one is an epic where the baiter gets the scammer to send him a wooden bust of his (the baiter's) head and then photoshops a response, claiming that some made up animal like an "African wood weasel" had accidentally been packed in the box and made a nest inside the head, so he couldn't close the deal.

That one went on for months, if not years.

While these guys are truly vicious and heartless criminals, it is actually pretty sad that this kind of scamming is something like the second or third more profitable industry in Nigeria. I'm sure some of them view fleecing old people out of their pensions as simply "f'ing the Man", and to some extent they do have a point.

Even the old people who get scammed are likely to have better lives than many of the scammers' countrymen.

That's no excuse, of course, but it puts this weird phenomenon into a little bit of perspective.

Yup, this is the same site i went to when i got scammed. I included a link above to the thread where they worked on that guy for a while. The trophy is absolutely histarical! Some of the pictures are really freaky looking too.
