Tropical Storm Fay

Post by agingerbugg » Aug Thu 21, 2008 5:46 pm

For those of you unfortunate enough to live in another state other than Florida, I thought I would share some pictures of Our latest visitor, Tropical Storm Fay. These were taken around 6:00pm EDT on August 21. As of right now we are just getting started, the storm has technically not come ashore yet and I am about 75 miles from the coast. More to come as the evening progresses.

Some branches in the front yard.
Poor tree can't stand up against the weight of the rain.
The rain overflowing the gutter, I had to use the flash so it would show up.
The rain without the flash.
Enjoy.

I hope all those that live in Florida get out all right without so much complications. Let's hope that this doesn't turn into another hurricane.

It won't turn into a hurricane. She is too near the coast and is moving onto land, albeit very slow. There is no need to evacuate, at this point it is more dangerous to try and leave then to stay at home and rideout the storm.

Have you seen pictures of WDW? Did they get as much rain as I think they did?

No, Disney is very secretive about storm aftermaths. My sister worked there during Hurricane Charley, she was not a volunteer for the tie-down crew, but knew another cm who was and they are sworn to secrecy. Even the weatherbug cameras during Charley were "unavailable." Fay, however is not anywhere near as strong as Charley. The worst Disney may have suffered is flooding, it all depends on how well they drain runoff. I know the west side of my house is very saturated right now (bad news for the hickory oak over there). The winds have really picked up, just hope the tree falls away from the house. There are plenty of trees to prevent it from smashing into the neighbors. More updates later if the power stays on.

That really surprises me that they let it appear so bad at AK. I know that my sister, who was a CM at MGM said that MK, EPCOT and MGM said the only sign anything had happened were a few missing trees and perhaps some of those pardon our dust walls. She didn't get to AK, but visited the other three the next day.

as of about 5 or 6pm today, they said the current path will take the storm into the Gulf where is could pick up strength and hit anywhere from FL again to Louisiana. But, we shall see what happens within the next few days...

Well, I am in Ft. Lauderdale, and we are still getting some affects from the strom. Schools start early here, and they were delayed two days. I still had to work so I missed out on most of the storms and wind, but heard plenty of thunger. Tonight as I was driving to meet my parents for my dads birthday, I had to pull over the rain was so bad! We are still getting feeder bands all the way down here. I saw some of the most amazing lightning though. Good luck to everyone.

Okay, well Fay has been very disappointing. She has given mostly rain, the "Today Show" on NBC did mention that Gainesville had winds around 50mph this morning, but they didn't do anything that I have seen. So not to disappoint you, I have decided to post the only digital hurricane pictures I have. These are all from 2004 when I weathered (pun intended) Hurricane Frances. I also experienced Jeanne that year, but she was much smaller and faster than Frances, so there was nothing special about her.

Here is a picture of the calm before the storm. The nice thing about pre-hurricane weather is that there is usually little humidity, the storm sucks it all up.

The storm has arrived.

The aftermath, this tree fell and hit the building I was living in at the time. It hit the other end so my apartment was safe and just damaged the balcony of the one it hit.

A tree that fell in the parking of my building, I don't remember if it hit any cars.

This tree fell across the access drive to this little apartment block near my complex. This is the only way in and out of the parking lot. The tree was not removed for nine days, they could not repair the power lines into the apartments until the tree was moved. Poor people, I would not have been happy, the city said they had to clear roadways and whatnot before they could get to private property. Don't you love bureaucracy?

I have a few short videos, but it's just a bunch of wind and rain. Although it is a little awe inspiring to see the tall pines in the second picture disappear behind the building.

Hanna may hit Florida if she doesn't turn. Here's hoping she turns. The Carolinas are in need of a good storm. They haven't had anything since Hugo in what, 1989?
