Why is GMT 5 hours ahead of eastern time? OK, what does GMT stand for. This is going to be one of those DUH! moments isn't it? Goofy isn't my guy for no reason!

GMT is Greenwich Mean Time. to find out more about it, check out this link. here's an excerpt on GMT and how it works:
[quote]All time zones are measured from a starting point centered at England's Greenwich Observatory. This point is known as the Greenwich Meridian or the Prime Meridian. Time at the Greenwich Meridian is known as Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) or Universal Time. The Eastern time zone in the United States is designated as GMT minus five hours. When it is noon in the Eastern time zone, it is 5 p.m. at the Greenwich Observatory. The International Date Line (IDL) is located on the opposite side of the planet from the Greenwich Observatory. GMT = Greenwich Mean Time. That is basically what the time around the world is based on. All the time zones are either + a certain number of hours above GMT or some are - a number of hours from GMT. This is just an easier way of determining a specific time zone basically. Where im from (PST) is 8 hours less from GMT.

Are you eastern or central time zone?

Thank you!! Yes, I just didn't realize. This is why ancient sailors needed accurate clocks so they could keep track of their longitude! I knew it would be a DUH!! moment

if you actually read the article at the link I posted, GMT wasn't created until 1884. Previous to that, sailors actually used the Rose Line that ran through Paris.

That's the first time I've ever read that. There were just a series of shows on Columbus and they kept referring to GMT.
