Help Me Name Something! -- Now With Poll Goodness!

Post by spaulo » Mar Fri 09, 2007 5:11 pm

This is *kinda* Disney-related, but not enough to go in "Anything Else"

I play fantasy baseball. A lot. 4-6 teams a season, most of them in money leagues. I've earned a couple thousand dollars over the last few years playing a game. I take naming my teams seriously...

I have been invited to join my father's venerable, 12-years-and-counting keeper league and need a name. My team names almost always have something to do with Disney. Some standards I use include:

Grim Grinning Ghosts
Ne'er-Do-Well Cads
The Mad Hatters
Hook's Crew

I need a name for this team, and would like it to be something else (though "Cads" is the least-used of my normal names, so I can fall back to that one)

Some names I'm currently batting around:

Walt's Nine Old Men
The Nine Old Men
Walt's Nine
Uncle Walt's Nine

WDI Company Softball Team?

But your suggestions need nothing to do with that! Just ANYTHING Disney-related to help brainstorm would be great!

Note: I need a team name for this team by the end of the month, not sooner... so please, all the help you can give will be appreciated!

How about the Nifty Nine (a play on the Fab Five)?
Uhm...what else...
Figment's Dream Team
Main Street Field Players
The Incredibles

I think that's all I can muster for now

Alright so this name isn't exactly Disney, but it's what just popped in my head.
"Captain Spaulding's Fabulous 9" (inside joke for all you Rob zombie fans...)

umm...

"The Imagineers"
"Walt Disney's All Stars"
"Snow White and the 9 Dwarves"
"Epcot and the Lunar landers" (sounds like a band name)

that's what i got....

I liked Figment's Dream Team, myself. I'm not creative in making up names for things, so I'm just going say go with the Dream Team and leave it to others to come up with more.

TikiTikiRoom:

How about "Dr. Wolfenstien's Cadavers"

Anywho, Spaulo here are a few

"The COP's" (Carousel Of Progress)
"The Main Streeters" (Sounds like a band name too)
"The Hitchhikers"
"The Diz Kids" named after the Philadelphia Wiz Kids back in the 40's and 50's

If you were doing Hockey I would say the "Mickey Maniacs"

This is all I have right now but I have only been thinking for about 10 minutes and then I got side tracked by another thought and then into another, and another, etc. I will think of some more later.

I like the "Nine Old Men"
But here are some other ideas:
Casey's Corner All-Stars
Richard Petty Driving Experience
The Mouseketeers
Dream Squad (after those people who give out the Million Dreams prizes)
MouseMen
Iger's Tigers

Maybe you could do something like taking a real MLB team name and Disneyfying it like instead of the Detroit Tigers, they could be the Detroit Rahja's (or whatever Princess Jasmine's pet tiger was called).

If you are doing NL only or AL only you could be the "It's A Small Worlds"

Out of curiosity, what projection system are you using? PECOTA? And how are you ranking players? I know, I know, trade secret, but still...

Thanks for all the help with naming ideas everyone!

ambiguity: yeah, PECOTA is my bread and butter, but also ZiPS (from Baseball Think Factory) for a second opinion and Hardball Times for some good historical stats.

But mostly PECOTA, and most often, I use VORP as my overall performance metric for both hitters and pitchers. The funny thing is, in the league i've joined and am trying to name the team in this thread, it's not standard Roto or points or anything, it's Scoresheet, which is like Strat-o-Matic or other "simulation" games... you need a real, full bullpen, and defense matters. Luckily, the BP fellas came up with a stat that takes that into account (SS/Sim) and works like a Runs Above Average in those games, so I'm leaning pretty heavy on them for this draft.

@spaulo

Cool, I'm not in any money league, but do run a Yahoo league for my family. It's a lot of fun, but not worth a BP subscription to get PECOTA. I'm going to try CHONE 2.1 this year, but use ZiPS for pitching as they even outperformed PECOTA in pitching (although batting didn't even beat Marcel)

Hope it goes well, you have to tell us what name you use!

I voted for the Doom Buggies, because it's cool sounding and a little bit scary, but Snow White and the 9 Dwarves gives me a hilarious mental image.
