there is an auction (and the link I'm about to post isn't the first one I've seen, either) for the "actual helmet that Ben Rothlisberger wore when he was in the accident yesterday. this auction has one bid as of the time of this post. I saw an auction for the same thing earlier today which had 48 bids coming to a total of almost $150.00. people are sick today, see here:

Right!!!
Someone has a pretty good sense of humor. (or is that sick sense of humor?)
I am glad to hear he's doing better.

Ok, I find this hilarious - and I'm thrilled to hear he's going to be ok.

Alright I thought this was a little funny until I read the guy was making a statement about people wearing a helmet.
It also says that they are donating part of the proceeds to a foundation.

the first auction that was removed didn;t have any kind of message or anything. just a guy with a beat up box making some money.
I find this auction funny, as many of you probably do too. The problem I have with something like this is that there are actually people who buy this stuff. sure, it'd be good for a laugh with some friends, but why waste your time and money on something like this? makes no sense.

But ya know, anyone who falls for something like this and acutally pays for this can't be the sharpest tool in the shed. One thing for sure is that there is always a sucker out there that will be anything whether it's an empty box or a piece of toast with the image of the Virgin Mary.

Survival of the fittest. Someone who spends money on this is either stupid or rich, so they fit into the social darwinism of our cynical day and age.
As for Big Ben... I lost all respect I had for him in this incident. He's just another punk kid who thinks he's invincible. (a) any professional athlete who rides a motorcycle is putting their body... i.e., their livelihood... at an unacceptable level of risk. (b) anyone who rides a motorcycle without the proper safety equipment is stupid, reckless, or both.
I hope he's ok. I hope he can still play football and make a living doing what he loves. But I will never again be able to respect Ben Roethlisberger.

i wish ebay would put a halt to idiotic items like this. i find it ridiculous. i know there are some very gullable people out there, but ebay shouldn't facilitate taking advantage of people...at least not to this degree and this often. i've seen so many really stoopid items up for bid. i think 1 of the dumbest (in my opinion) was a "rock" that some girl's boyfriend used to break their car window (cuz they locked the keys inside) while they were being chased by an angry bear in a park. she actually made a ton of money...on a stupid rock!
**DISCLAIMER**
i apologize if u are that rock seller...or any1 who bid on it...or any other idiotic items for sell on ebay. would u like 2 buy some moldy cheese i have in my fridge that looks just like ghandi?

I was just about to say that too. I just started reading this thread. I live in PA the RIGHT half, I think that repealing the helmet rule was retarded. I lost all respect for Ben because of this accident. He is young and has/had a great career ahead of him and he screws it up. Granted Accidents will happen but a helmet would have helped prevent the broken jaw, missing teeth, and the 9 inch laceration.

Having had jaw surgery, and knowing that they put braces on your teeth and use them as anchors to immobilize your jaw (wire it shut) until it sets, I wonder what they will do since he lost his teeth. Having had some background in this area, I bet they will have to screw titanium plates to the bones through his gums, and then use those plates to immobilize the jaw. All could have been avoided...
Even more stupid in light of this article last month:

Actually he apparently "only" lost two teeth, and chipped "several" others. So there are probably still plenty of teeth to anchor his jaw bones.

Well He was released.
Pittsburgh, Pa. - June 15, 2006 - Ben Roethlisberger was released from a hospital late Wednesday night after spending more than two days recovering from facial injuries he sustained in a motorcycle accident.
The Steelers quarterback left Mercy Hospital a little before midnight. It was unclear where he went, said team spokesman Dave Lockett.
Doctors had encouraging words Wednesday about Roethlisberger, whose motorcycle collided with a car at a Pittsburgh intersection Monday morning. A second round of tests again showed no brain injuries, although he has a concussion.
Roethlisberger got out of his bed to greet visitors Wednesday, less than 48 hours after being admitted to a hospital located only a few blocks from the crash site.
Players who visited with Roethlisberger said he is upbeat, and they are convinced he will be back quickly and with no diminished skills. Counting the playoffs, the Steelers have a 27-4 record with Roethlisberger at quarterback and have advanced to two AFC championship games and won a Super Bowl during his two seasons as a starter.
His release was kept a secret from the Pittsburgh media, which has stationed reporters and cameras at the hospital each day. The hospital released a statement saying that it "respected the wishes and privacy of Mr. Roethlisberger and his family" by not confirming his discharge until about nine hours later.
Because Roethlisberger's multiple facial fractures, broken nose and broken upper and lower jaw are being held in place by screws and 2-inch titanium plates, he can eat soft foods - and not be restricted to liquids - during an estimated six- to eight-week recovery period.
"We take a titanium plate, bend it and adapt it to the contours of the facial bones and then secure it in place with screws," surgeon Daniel Pituch said. "This kind of state-of-the-art technology allowed us to successfully treat Mr. Roethlisberger's facial fractures."
As a result, the 240-pound Roethlisberger probably won't lose as much weight as he would have on an all-liquid diet. The Steelers have not given a timetable for his return, but they are optimistic he will be ready for their Sept. 7 opener against Miami.
One of the team's concerns was how long Roethlisberger would need to regain his weight and strength after being unable to work out for what might be an extended period.

He's publicly apologized for his stupidity - I hope he does well. I think he's learned a tough lesson.
