Okay today was a wierd day. my daughter was outside playing with her friends and I was upstairs. I here the Doorbell ring and I go to answer it. it take a minute to get downstairs and to the front door. I answer the door and no one was there. hmmmmmmmmmm i thought just before I close the door i look down and see a black bag sitting on my front door step. I picked it upo and I see it has a huge HP logo on it. At this point my hands started to shake I was so excited. I open it up it is a Laptop computer. it wasn't in a box but a travel bag. i nearley threw up front the excitement ( have wanted a laptop for so long). Now here is the problem. I have no idea where it came from. what should I have done. Answer the poll to tell me

So your daughter didn't see anyone walk up to the door? Maybe that could shed some light on the situation.

I'm afraid I'd have been the good citizen and called the police. That is totally bizarre though. You'll have to tell us what happens eagle.

the problem with me calling the police. What happens if it was a gift from someone that didn't want to let me know it came from them. I give it to the Police they keep it and in a week some I know says so hows that laptop I got for you where you suprised. That would suck. See me and my family do a lot of noce things for people some of which may not know me personaly but i have done something to change thier life. Talk about a moral problem.
Update: sofar no one has come to my door asking for it

Have you tried to turn it on, to see if it said who owned it or you know that type of stuff.

In that case SCORE!!! Because if you do take it to the police and it has never been used or setup they may just tell you to keep it anyway.

I think it is a good idea to call the police because if you don't know where the laptop came from. Call the police

Ok so it was taken out of the box and put into a case, but never fired up??? Either its stolen (which i highly doubt) or someone you know gave it to you without wanting to tell you. I'd keep it.
Just my 2 cents

Given that the registration screen came up, there is still the possibility that it has previously been used. If the original restore CDs or Windows OS CDs were used to re-format the hard drive, you would get the same result (registration screens).
Antoher thing to do to try and determine source (other than police which I voted for in the poll)is to look at the serial number of the laptop. Using it may allow you to determine who bought it or from where it was purchased.

Aaron

I agree with most of the above.. Call the police just to check it out. If one of your family or friends gets mad cause they were giving you a present you can just tell them they did a crappy job of giving you a present!
There should have been something at least in the bag saying who it was from so you didnt go and take it to the police.
CAll you friends/family too maybe?

I agree with you addlema. I'd call the police. In this day and age you just can't be too careful.

You know I was thinking more about this. I would call the police imediatly without even having touched the package.. Who knows what could be in it.
Since you have no idea the circumstances I would do anything to make sure my family is safe.

Dang it, don't cha hate it when your conscious gets in the way
I agree I would call the police and tell them what happened. I bet in a week (if that's how long they keep it) you will have a new laptop. Good luck, let us know what you decide to do.
