I have a lot of friends in Michigan as well, and I truly feel for those that live in that state. But I am not in favor of our government saving the Big 3. Let their unions rescue them since they are the cause of a lot (not all) of their Big 3's problems! Do you think the unions are suffering in these economic times, NO! Free money from the government is not the answer. Restructuring and changing your operating practices is a start to correct a horrible problem! And yes I am NOT fan of unions!
Our company struggles every month to meet payroll and expenses why are we any different? If the government wants to get the economy going BAIL OUT THE PEOPLE not corporations!!
*steps off soap box*
What you have said here absolutely scares me to death. It's not just the auto industry that will be affected. It's the millions of people who work for the retail and restaurants. The businesses that supply those businesses and so on. The cascade effect of the three major auto companies going under would make 1929 look like a day at WDW. It would be not just a local event it would be nation wide. Check that, WORLD WIDE!!
The short sightedness of not coming up with some kind of bailout would be horrendous! You think local governments are having a hard time now, well just wait and see. I can't believe there are so many out there have that "just screw them attitude". I fear for my country!

here's a news story on how much gas prices have dropped. basically, it says how people are talking about how gas could soon be under $1.00/gallon, the lowest since March of 1999.
around the B-lo area, we've still not seen the 1 in front of prices at the pump, though we have seen seen some relief. as of my last post, we were at $2.49. yesterday I saw $2.23, and today I saw $2.15. Should get lower than that by next week...

Here it has gotten as low as $1.58 last week. Now it's up slightly to $1.65. Still not bad, not bad at all.

Our prices range, I saw two stations within a mile of each other one was $1.759, the other $1.959. Now I think that is a little ridiculous; can anyone say price gouging?

Gas is a strange commodity. Depending on what oil company it comes from, and the station at which it's sold, the price could legitimately vary by ten or twenty cents. Thus, Kangaroos that sell generic gas will have lower prices than Kangaroos that sell Chevron or BP gas.
Of course, some of it is up to the station owners. They make only a very slim profit on gasoline sales, which is why stations that don't have any nearby competition will typically charge more.

There are other factors involved with the price of gas as well, such as local taxes. As I have said previously, here in Alachua County, we have some of the highest - if not the highest - gas tax in all of Florida. But I was referring more to the fact that within that one mile stretch of road there are six gas stations, the lowest being $1.75 the highest $1.95. I understand the whole concept of capitalism and free enterprise, it just seems a little insane for a business to charge that much more for a commodity that can be purchased so nearby for less.

we just had a local news story on station owner profits. here in Western NY, the average price is $2.23, the state average is $2.12, and the national average is $1.77. They said that typically, station owners make about $0.20-$0.24 profit per gallon. around WNY, owners are making around $0.38. the FTC is getting involved in an investigation as to why we're paying the second highest prices in the country.

$2.23?? I'm glad I don't live there. I saw gas today for $1.57 and I think that even premium has dipped down to just under $2.00.

personally, I haven't seen the $2.23. all the stations around me are at around $2.15. however, the $2.23 is what they say the average is...

Rumor has it in about a year gas could dip down to about $1.00 a gallon. That would be a great treat. Cheapest near me is $1.59 for regular and $1.79 for premium. It feels good to be able to get a full tank for under $40 bucks!

The cheapest I've seen was about $1.97. Here's to hoping that it goes down by Christmas.

I drove past a station this afternoon that was $2.03. the same station was $2.05 early this morning. My thinking is that by Monday, it'll FINALLY be under $2.00, and we'll finally get to see a 1 BEFORE the decimal point...
