We now have a mom (in door out door) and four kittens living on our enclosed back porch. Mom is a farm cat, Baloo and DS decided that they were gonna keep a kitten and get homes for the others. I found out we are keeping two. As soon as we get the pictures up-loaded I will post them.
PS MmeLeota don't you just love kitten play time?

Re: Post a Pic of Your Cat
One more thing Jacca5660: you need to start working at an early age with the kittens on their social skills. The cat adoption agency that was helping me said the kittens needed to be "approachable" and "socialable". People had to be be able to approach and pick up the cat, and the cat wanted to be held and petted. I had started too late in this with the litter I gained because the mother was very good at hiding her litter. I was able to only able to succeed with two of mine, the other two were not adoptable and are outside cats to one of the women who run the cat adoption agency. Hopefully, you have the advantage to can start on these cats while they're still very young. Also, as you have your DW and DS there, there's more humans for the kittens to interact with at your house. If you know anyone with children 12+ years old, you may want to invite them around to play with the kittens. It allows the kittens to get used to idea of children.
Also, how many litter trays do you have? You'll be amazed how much kittens can fill up a litter tray more than adult cats. I had three at first for the mother cat and her 4 kittens, but I soon had to add a fourth.

Me either Amy, I used to be a cat person... I've had a dog now for 12 years and can't go back to cats even if I wanted to. Wife is allergic to the long hair. I guess I could get a hairless cat and be like Dr. Evil... hmmmm....

Actually, according to a show on the animal planet, there's a breed of a cat that's hair that is not only allergy-tolerable, but acts a mild anti-histamine. Wish I could remember the name of that breed of cats...NaCler wrote:Me either Amy, I used to be a cat person... I've had a dog now for 12 years and can't go back to cats even if I wanted to. Oh NaCler, those hairless cats are sooooo ugly!
I only had one cat that I truly liked, Patrick, a farm cat of friends while growing up - he had no tail since it had been stepped on by a cow when he was little. He was huge and grey and purred like mad. He loved to try to sit on my Mom's lap even though she was highly allergic and would shoo him off.
The cat where I babysat used to stalk me and bring me dead things, which they told me was a sign of affection - ugh, no thanks! My friend's cats hide and when they do allow you to play with them, scratch when jumping for their dangling toys.
They are pretty to look at and pet once in awhile but I think I will stay kitty free...plus they make me sneeze and my eyes water

Re: Post a Pic of Your Cat
I guess I could add something to this thread though... We always had odd names for our cats. We had a cat named Dummy as he always did stupid things like climb up the curtains and get stuck there so we would always say, "You Dummy!" It just kind of stuck with him. The cat after him was named Tacky... not so sure HOW he got this name. This of course led to many openings, such as when someone would say, "now that's tacky..." then we would always jump in and say, "nope, doesn't look a thing like Tacky!" Stupid, I know...
I guess if we got a cat now, his name would be Twit. Read my trip report if you need clarification on that one.

Errrrrrrrr, don't look at me for cat names. Mine was called "Gray" because she had silver gray fur. Eventually we called her "Kitty" because she used to largely object to any name we gave her and we tried a few ("Fido", "Duchess", etc.) but the only name she would respond to was "Kitty". I guess her previous owners that abandoned her called her that.NaCler wrote:I guess I could add something to this thread though... We always had odd names for our cats. My large, white outdoor male feral cat is named....White.
Another feral cat I had tried to work on to domesticate was black with white paws and a white triangular bib on its neck. His name was...Tuxedo.
A pregnant feral kitten we brief had before she vanished we called....Childbride.
And the pregnant stray kitten we eventually got into the cat adoption agency would only eat Friskies. We called her....Friskette.
Not much originality in those cat names!

Re: Post a Pic of Your Cat
Thank you for all the advice!
These kittens have been handled and loved on since the mother has let us (about 3 to 4 weeks). They are very humanized and loved to be handled. They are very social and they all seem to get a long. Our male cat even plays with them. Our female on the other hand, wants nothing to do with them.
We have two litter boxes and the kitten have been trained since they were 6 weeks, they're about 9 now. Yes they are a handful and get it to places that just make you scratch your head. My family and I have been around cats and kittens all our lives, so this is just another litter to deal with. We have a no kill adoption center here and they are ready for the two we aren't keeping when we take them. We are going to wait 10 to 12 weeks so they are fully weened.
One can even DANCE!!

Crud!!! I've seen that exact program and I can't remember the breed either.mindflipper wrote:Actually, according to a show on the animal planet, there's a breed of a cat that's hair that is not only allergy-tolerable, but acts a mild anti-histamine. NaCler, I meant to comment on the shirts...so, do you hold "upperclass twit of the year" contests in your family??? I have refrained from using "twit" for a while now, perhaps I now have a reason to start using it again....
I have resorted to human names and am surprised that I haven't received credit card offers for them yet
Nearly 5 years later (Thelma & Louise are almost 9 and Ella is 5) , some days they get along, others they don't...it's a crap shoot.
Sorry for the novel...

My cat quite literally did pick out her own name. She's very independent minded, and would let out a loud meow that sounds like "no" whenever any of us called her by a name other than "Kitty".MmeLeota wrote:Originally I was hoping to stick with a Disney theme, but I am a believer of "letting the cat pick its own name"

Re: Post a Pic of Your Cat
Y'all know I'm a cat lover and have two of my own. I've told the story of how we named them before, but it was a long time ago, so here it is again:
The older one we named Audrey after Audrey Hepburn because she had such a beautiful face and huge "Bambi" eyes. It just seemed to fit.
The younger one is a sad but touching story: Back when we first got Audrey, we got another cat at the same time who reminded us of Cleopatra (very exotic looking), so we named her Cleo. She was our favorite (sorry, Audrey...), and we were always carrying her around and baby-talking her. Hence, we would call her "Ceo" in baby talk (pronounced Kio).
She and I had a tradition: every morning when I was getting ready for work, I would carry her around and let her try to touch things high up on the walls. She loved doing that. One morning we were doing our thing, and as she reached her paw up to bat something on the wall, she suddenly fell back into my arms with her eyes dilated, let out a long "roooowwwwwwwrrrrr....." and died. Just like that. The vet later said it was probably a brain aneurism because she couldn't find a thing wrong with her during the necropsy. In fact, she said Cleo was one of the healthiest cats she had ever seen (we took real good care of our cats, even had health insurance for them...). We cried for days.
After a suitable greiving period, we got another one to replace her (Audrey was so lonesome, and a cat should always have a companion). In trying to name her, we wanted to honor Cleo's memory, so I said "How about a form of Cleo 2, in baby talk?" Hence: Kiotu. Kiotu has a little bit of Siamese in her, so it was a perfect fit. She is now Daddy's little girl even more than her predecessor was.
As for funny names, I don't do that to my cats, but I do have a funny story from when I used to raise Chihuahuas. I liked to give each litter a bunch of unique names just for kicks. One litter of five puppies I named: "Consternation", "Sacrament", "Riboflavin", "Reverse", and "Bob".
Ironically, Riboflavin was the runt of the litter and died, and the little body was then eaten by the father. So after we got over the sadness, guess what.... you see it coming don't you....?
I said, "well, I guess he ate it because he needed a little more Riboflavin in his diet!"
