Recent reports show that the International Space Station is going to fail if NASA cannot get back to regular space flights of the shuttle soon. The ISS is a key piece for testing space endurance and carrying out experiments for future space travel. If the ISS fails, that will set new projects back considerably, as well as create even more negative press for NASA and pressure to stop funding NASA. So, in short, the shuttle program is pretty critical right now, even if to just push forward on new technology.
