Just remember that if you want to oust a torrent free loader, you have to host the file in the first place; otherwise it's impossible to know 100% if the file is not merely called "Metallica - Sandman". It is a grave assumption that:

1)torrents are all 100% trades of illegal, copyrighted material
2)it wasn't paid for

(my university background speaking here) there are a lot of legit uses of trading large files that are chopped up and fed by torrents.

Let's also not forget (as of the last I heard) downloading music isn't illegal it's the uploading. All this brought to you by the same branch of igorance which, through the DMCA, makes it illegal to rip encrypted content for personal use; which happens every time you play a DVD on your TV or PC.

Does anybody remember way back when Sony lobbied to make VCR's illegal (It was in the 80's kids)? It's Sony that has pushed to make the laws so restrictive. I'll admit when my boys were younger, when they got a DVD they played all the time (You parents out there know what I mean), I'd make copies for their room DVD player so I didn't have to go buy a new one when they trashed it.

Now, by a strict sense, this is illegal. Here's the funny part, do you know who sells the most burners and blank disk? You know it, SONY. Do you know part of the price of a blank disk is a royalty for copy write infringement.

Answer me this: Why is it legal for me to make cassettes of my music and not legal to make a CD copy of the same music. I have a stereo with a CD player and cassette recorder. I can make copies of any of my music that I have on CD. Now if I download the same music and like I said when I started this thread, I don't remember the last time I went to a store to buy music. I buy it all on-line. It's illegal for me to put it to disk. I also have the ability to record to cassette from my computer, is this illegal?

Some one in an earlier post equated it to shoplifting. Explain how what I just said is shoplifting? You are or have to be an industry person. Oh yea, I still have a dual VCR that I can dub movies with, it that stealing also. I like the French laws, they deal with digital media the same way they deal with analog.

Is that still legal? I'm not suggesting you're up to no good (;) ), I just didn't think it would be any more. I honestly never looked into it.

I remember when computer programs and games used to come with documentation saying you were allowed one copy for 'archival purposes'. They don't do that anymore. In fact, there are increasing numbers of software manufacturers that make it so you can only install software you buy so many times before your key stops working. That one really ticks me off. I guess I'm some kind of anomaly that keeps games for a long time to go back to. >.>

Because you're still putting the microphone to the radio, admit it.

The short answer...YES! (In the DAY I was one of those kids who recorded music off the radio. An advantage of growing up in NYC, the radio station WNEW played the whole album on Sunday night.) The long answer is a matter of software and computer configuration. It's just that analog and digital media are treated so different.

I know I started this because of the Nazi attitude of a local DJ. It's morphed in a discussion about downloading (legal and illegal) music. I'm a fairly intelligent person and I (after reading this and many, many other sources) still don't understand why it's illegal (and demonized) to make copies of digital media I've already bought. I also understand when you buy software you only get to install it so many times. This gets to me, how many of us hasn't had a hard drive die? It's legal built in profit. It's wrong and it needs to be changed.

As for pirating, people are going to take their chances. Did prohibition stop America from drinking, NO! All it did was make a few people very rich! This brings another question:

Is it illegal for me to record from my computer to cassette, back to my computer to burn a CD/DVD MP3? This reminds me of one of those question my Psych prof would give me in college.

Back to Lis's question.. It's a much better mic!  8-)

Jacca5660, I think one of the key parts of your argument it that tape is not a perect copy and degrades with each generation. Digital is a perfect copy.

DisBeamer, timeshifting music/video is allowed. Archiving may be a different issue.

Being old school, I'm a big analog fan. You just can't get the feel and sound of vinyl on a digital copy. I don't think you can get the depth. About being a perfect copy, there is digital degradation. How many times have you had a disk just stop working, I know I have. Each format has their pros and cons. I'm more interested why there is such a legal difference. It just doesn't make any sense, it something the recording industry has always wanted. Digital media is a BAD excuse! Like someone said here, they would stop you from humming if they could.

That's why I have a dual VCR and have backed up my kids DVD's!

lol, that's odd because we back up our VHS's to DVD's. We've amassed a huge collection of VHS's, and it isn't practical to keep them all anymore.

Anyway, in respect to downloading, in my previous post I was referring to people who do clearly illegal downloadings, not borderline things. I myself rip my DVD's for personal use; mainly backup, and also so I can watch the movie on my computer without using the disk. Although I will say, Disney did a smart think when they started adding Digital Files to their DVD's...I've had my Prince Caspian DVD for three months now, and I haven't ripped it yet because with the Digital File, I haven't needed to. Think of all the ripping they saved when they rolled that option out, lol.

That is a bit crazy about the DJ...I am amused by Casrin's scenario..yeah that would be a bit much!!

I pay a fee each month to have access to Rhapsody so I can keep music updated on my MP3 player so I can listen to my music guilt free.
