I'm a middle schooler with my heart fixed on being a 2-d Disney animator! I just hope the position will be around when I grow up!

fig...keep that dream no matter what!

my daughter and I spent an hour one night discussing what she likes and what she would love to do as a job. she wants to design rides. so we discussed Engineering, i asked her if she did get a job with disney and they didn't need her to design rides but to design bathrooms would she be ok with that. she said sure! so she is finishing 9th grade and concentrating on her grades so she can become an engineer. (and ultimately an Imagineer!) all mapped out...1 year community college, 1 year Disney internship, finish at the University after that. She even decided that dating and boys need to wait. she doesn't want to compromise her dream. (she also realized she may meet a hottie at Disney and right away there is one thing they have in common.) so far....so good.

you got that right! we are encouraging her to enjoy life and travel. make sure she can support herself without any man to help first....then add one to the mix later, one that can add too not burden.

Oh, cool. Meteorologist fans of Disney unite! :D S'funny, when I was in the 'hot seat' for the who wants to be a millionaire attraction, the time ran out and so they had me wait around to continue on the next show. During the 'break' before the audience all filed out, this guy ran up to me and was all "HEY I'M A METEOROLOGIST TOO!" Turned out he worked for the ... fox? affiliate.. I think ... in Orlando. We're everywhere.

Technically I'm not from GA, just live here now (I actually moved here for this job). Definitely a small world (after all - ha, couldn't resist).

You just burned out on weather after the navy stint, or is it not something you were ever really interested in getting into permanently?

I had thought about being a meteorologist at some point. Ended up getting a degree in Geography thinking I would go into GIS, but ended up working at a screenprinting company. I think I enjoy this job more than I would have enjoyed sitting at a computer, making and analyzing maps and data all day.

oh my stint in the navy is not over yet. still have 6.5 years till I hit 20. then retire unless the navy offers my a sweat deal.

after the navy, don't know if I want to continue weather or not. Depends on what jobs are available. we shall see. it not, then something in computers probably. what type of degree do you need to get hired on to the weather channel?

people ask me what I do in the navy and I tell them I am a fortune teller... I can predict the future... there are only about 1000 of us in the entire navy. small community.

where in GA do you live? not many people have heard of woodstock... right next door to Marietta and kennesaw. in fact, kennesaw is where we lived at first for about 6 months.

it is not all about sitting in front of a computer. at least in the navy it is not. sometimes doing weather can be borning ( high pressure) but when the weather hits the fan, it gets interesting fast. phone ringing off the hook wondering what the heck is going on and when will the storms stop. and why didn't you tell anyone when you did for the past 3-4 days. planes and thunderstorms do not go together.

being a meteorologist is a conversation started. how many have you ever met? not an everyday job... I didn't think I would enjoy it but love it now.

Oooh I see. I thought you were closer to the finish line than that. I'm not sure about the overall job market for mets in the US (I came here in a kinda roundabout way; I'm actually Canadian); I know the NWS jobs are very competitive but with your kind of background I assume that'd be a leg up. I dunno. There's lots of different met positions at TWC, really. I have an honors degree in atmospheric science but there's all kinds of different roles. (To be honest I don't know that much about it beyond my own department  ).

I was gonna say it's surprising there are so few in the navy but then I think about the area one met can cover and maybe it's not so surprising. ;)

We actually live in Atlanta 'proper' but I do indeed know where Woodstock is. We actually climbed up Kennesaw Mountain a few weekends ago (side note: man that's a climb). Not too far from here.

Amen to that. It's always surprising to me when I say what I do how many people say "OH I always wanted to do that!!" It wasn't really a life-long ambition for me; maybe that's why I'm surprised.

We may be talking in the near future my new found friend!
I have some electrical projects that I would like to work on this summer for all of my displays. Granted I live in Pennsylvania but I can send you shipping labels if need be, I get them for free.
