NO GAS...On May 15th 2007

Post by eagle4life69 » May Tue 08, 2007 2:54 pm

Don't pump gas on May 15th. In April of 1997, there was a "gas out" conducted nationwide in protest of gas prices. Gasoline prices dropped 30 cents a gallon overnight.

On May 15th 2007, everyone is not to go to a gas station in protest of high gas prices. Gas is now over $3.00 a gallon in most places and almost $4.00 is some.

There are 73,000,000+ American members currently on the internet network, and the average car takes about 30 to 50 dollars to fill up.

If all users did not go to the pump on the 15th, it would take $2,292,000,000.00 (that's almost 3 BILLION) out of the oil company’s pockets for just one day, so please do not go to the gas station on May 15th and let’s try to put a dent in the Middle Eastern oil industry for at least one day.

I hope everyone will be with me in doing this. it is only 1 day but you never know it may help

I won't......but that's because I fill up about once a month. I take the train to work and I only drive on the weekends and very little at that......Thank God for Public transit being good.

Yes you would still need gas but if you didn't buy gas on that day and 700,000 people also didn't buy gas that normally would that would make a dint the more people that do not buy gas on that one day the bigger the dint. granted the day before and the day after will be one of the high days but you never know the true outcome.

This "gas out" idea is completely useless and is basically a hoax/scam... been circulating around the internet for at least 8 years... check Snopes:

Exactly. And not only that, but boycotts typically only hurt the person boycotting. Valiant effort though.

Like the gas companies care, especially after record breaking profits last year.

Ok so you don't get gas on the 15th...sure the gas companies will have a good laugh as everyone goes to the pumps the 16th.

Gas will continue to rise... just deal with it :)

I would also agree that this would never work. It would only have a small effect as some people might actually drive a little less to conserve.

The only way to lower your annual gas bill is to buy less gas. That means, drive less and more efficiently. Buy a hybrid, ride a bike, take public transportation. If you can't be inconvenienced to do that, then you can't complain about prices.

Besides, all that oil from Iraq should start flowing any day now...

I agree with Spaulo.

BUT....If you believe in that "gas-out" email going around, then I have a bridge to sell ya! ;) Whenever you read one of those emails.. however good/well-intentioned/etc. they may sound... you should ALWAYS check 1st to see if they're a scam or not... more than likely, they are just another email hoax. :)

The difference with this version of the "pump out" is the amount of attention it has had on both the network and cable news - I have heard them talking about it for days now. Even if it doesn't hurt the companies' pocketbooks, they might be surprised if the day showed a significant slow down, indicating we could restrict consumption when push comes to shove. Living near the extraction fields and a few refineries, the term gouge fits these conglomerates to a "T".
I won't buy just so they can't say we are addicted to the stuff.
I'd rather stay home and enjoy my "addiction" to Subsonic!!!!

The no gas thing has gone around and around the Internet at different times and I too looked it up on Snopes last year when prices started getting out of hand. Now whenever I get emails that ask us to forward them I go to Snopes to check out the validity. 99.9% of the time I end up deleting those kinds of e-mails anyway.

Until we become less dependant on oil, unfortunately the gas prices will continue to rise.

thee trick is not to stop getting gas, but to only buy from one company. If everyone buys from one company they would raise their prices because of the increase in demand and low supply. The other companies would all lower prices because of the adverse effect. People could move like locusts around from company to company.

Only problem is people are not willing to do it, lazy, dumb, or not informed. There really is no scheme that will cause people to lower gas prices. Even if we all start driving hybrids...gas prices would have to go up to make up the same profit with low sales. Only switching to alternate fuels would change the industry. (And there are high people preventing this from happening)

Enough conspiracy theory...Back to Disney. What is the single best thing Disney is doing to decrease its consumption of fossil fuels?

Yeah this really wont work because you would have to totally not drive that day because all the people who didnt fill up on the 15th would be on "E" on the 16th. This would result in a 3 billion dollar loss the 15th and a 3 billion dollar gain for the oil companies on the 16th. This = a no net change. LOL, the only two ways in which it would work are:

1. Everyone not drive at all on the 15th.
<this would be the only partial true solution.

2. Set up a date for the gas out on a day which is towards the end of the companies fiscal quarter so when they released earnings it would be shown there. Which in turn would effect their stock price. (But then again next quarter would be an added 3 billion because everyone would have to fill up.)

A good policy would be to watch and see who the "ring leader" is in raising prices in your area and boycot them for a while. Around here it's always Speedway. They're always first to raise the price and everyone else follows within the next six hours (many within a few minutes). This may give them the hint we're not very happy.
