Back after a 6-month hiatus

Post by kgmadorin » Mar Sun 18, 2007 10:21 pm

Long time no see! It’s been quite a while since our big move to New Orleans and my last visit to subsonic radio. Life has been a tumultuous whirlwind of activity since the move, with settling into the new digs and the new job. I’m now working as an event manager for Southern Oaks Plantation (be sure to check out our website… http://www.southernoaksplantation.com), which has been a wonderful place to work. Lots of inspiration taken from the Disney Co. in everything the plantation does, so I love it.

Just wanted to say hello to all my old friends here at subsonic radio. Glad to see that even with my absence I’m still number 16 on the posts list. Always did have a big mouth… Hopefully I’ll have more time to keep up with the posts now that we’re settled in.

By the way--the site looks great! Nice job, Sub! Wonderful little improvements everywhere I look...

I liked how they gave credit to Walt in the "About Us" section! Sounds like a really cool place. What do you do there exactly?

Welcome back to the boards btw! :mickey:

Welcome back kgmadorin, glad to see you are doing well. I missed your wonderfully upbeat take on things. Hope to see you around on the boards and maybe in the chat.

Welcome back kgmadorin! That's one impressive plantation you're working at. I loved the Disney castle cake! The food looked fabulous as well, but the attention to detail and service sounds just like all the things I admire so much in the Disney parks.

How's business after the hurricane, or are you in an area that wasn't too affected?
Drop another coin in slot and I will tell you more.

Well yeah thanks Captain Obvious, I was kind of wondering what that actually entails at a place like this, since I obviously don't everything there is know....

 I definitely missed you all. I'm sort of a utility infielder around there, doing everything from coordinating weddings and other events, to devising new and improved operating procedures for our weekly tasks. I'm both the scheduling manager and the HR coordinator. Although we have a large event staff (roughly 50 employees), there are only 7 people in our core unit of full time workers. That means we all wear many different hats to accomplish perfection week in and week out.

We were actually VERY lucky. Although I wasn't working at SOP (Southern Oaks Plantation) during the storm, I've heard all the details of what happened.

The plantation is located directly across from the Lake Pontchartrain levee, in an area that was inundated with up to eight feet of water. Being so close to the levee actually worked to the plantation's advantage, because the land is slightly higher in that area. SOP's grounds were flooded by about two feet of water, but the building itself is raised and did not flood.

It still took four months following Katrina for the plantation to reopen. The building needed a new roof, new columns out front, and all new landscaping. If you're interested in reading further, I wrote a press release a couple months ago that tells the whole story. It can be found at http://mmdnewswire.com/content/view/1250/
