A word if you please, part 2

Post by js3901 » Jan Sun 07, 2007 2:05 am

I posted this already in the Off Topic forum, however some people seem not to have noticed, so this is for ALL forums, not just Off Topic.

It has come to the attention of the admins (at least myself) that within recent weeks, there have been several new users who have signed up and posted within the forums (Off Topic and General being the main places), always creating a new thread, and always linking to at least 1 website (advertising banks, pharmiceuticals, porn, etc). A few tenured users have posted within these threads asking for them to be deleted or just pointing out that they look like spam. Also, PMs have been sent to alerts us of these things.

I would like to ask all seasoned users (and some of our newer, posting members) to NOT post in these threads. In addition, please do not PM us (the admins/mods) to check/delete the posts. I check the forums several times a day. I closely inspect EVERYTHING that is posted by EVERYONE to ensure we keep within the forum rules, and to make sure that everyone posting is legitimate. When I see these spam threads pop up, I immediately delete them (as well as the users who start the threads), without question. your posts within these threads will also be deleted.

I could go on with explanations, but to make a longer story short, save your time and energy, and let us take care of it. Just ignore them when you see them.

thanks for your cooperation

Sounds like the moderators are also not on frequently enough to watch out for this.

I only notice a spike on holiday weekends when most of us are with family, though on an average the Moderators and admins are handling the site really well

OK, just a tip here to further this issue...

It seems like these people are becoming very bold in their initiative to bring these forums down into the gutters. They are posting the links more and more frequently lately, and some are not just starting new threads. They are starting to post in some active (some are older, but they're still active) threads.

I just want to caution those of you who may come across these posts in either new or old threads. DO NOT CLICK THE LINKS. Many of these posts are links to what looks like a Windows Media Player streaming video window. A link within the "player" window will say that you do not have the proper codecs loaded to view the video, yet you will hear sounds. if you click that link in the "player" window, YOU WILL GET A VIRUS.

If you do see one of these posts, just ignore it completely. You will know the difference between a true SR forum member posting a link versus one of these spam posters, I assure you. Don't be a fool and click the link if you know it's not a true SR forum member. I'd hate to see anyone here lose use of their computers while they sort out the virus they get.

It's come to my (and the rest of the admin team) attention that there has been a definite increase in the number of spammers/advertisers on our nice, clean forums lately. I'd like to personally thank you all for not responding to the posts these people make (a few people have responded, but it's ok).

I just want to remind all to not click any links that may be within these spam posts. Some of them contain virus while others cause many pop-up windows. Also, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do NOT reply to these posts in ANY way, shape, or form. As soon as spotted, the threads/posts are deleted, and yours along with them. Save our time, and your own, and PLEASE, just don't do it. IGNORE THEM.

Rest Assured that we're trying to stamp these spammers out as soon as we see them. We take measures to ban emails, IP adress, and the like to stop people from spoiling our boards. Help us by not following any links they may provide, and do not reply to them.
