Unrequesting so many Carousel of Progress clips...

Post by Captain Schnemo » May Thu 04, 2006 3:57 am

I know this has been mentioned before, but since the show is so long and there seem to be so many versions, is there anything that can be done to limit the repetition of these tracks?

I wouldn't want to prevent anyone from requesting them, but it does seem like they pop up an awful lot.

I was actually interested to hear all the versions at first...I think the "now is the time" version is much less optimistic than the "great big, beautiful tomorrow" version. And it's funny to hear how strongly GE is plugged in the old World's Fair version.

But I really don't need to hear two or three versions within a couple hours.

Just a suggestion...

I'm not sure if they're exactly the same versions (the last act might have minor differences), but it looks like there's a full version of the World's Fair, Disneyland, and WDW shows along with each show's invidual slices.

Perhaps if the full shows were removed, this would still allow people to request the whole thing, but would avoid a situation where the Disneyland version plays all the way through, then a slice of another version plays, then the WDW makes me start throwing stuff at the computer.

I guess people could request their favorite slice, though, and mess it up for those who'd like to hear the whole thing at once, but I'm not sure how often people do that. It's not all that musicky and I find it sort of disruptive when I'm trying to work. Do you still have the old request stats? It might just be me moaning about it, but maybe others agree.

Anyway, I guess the thing that makes me so grumpy is that the shows are really similar, even though they are technically different, and there's only so much Cousin Orville one man can take...

Is there a way to make it so only maybe two versions can end up in the random queue and the rest people have to request? :?:

Wasn't there discussion of setting a "Request Only" flag for some of the longer tracks? That doesn't sound like it would be too difficult to program, and it would allow everyone to still hear stuff you're not 100% on (like the Disney Cruise stuff) without putting it in full rotation.

Arguing about what should have the flag might be more time-consuming than the programming aspect!

I do like the idea of songs that are request only. It's quite simple for me to do actually. Though, displaying that a tracks is request only would require recoding. I wonder if it's worth it to show that it'll never get randomly played. Probably not.

I love this idea, and it totally doesn't matter whether you display them as such. You only look at tracks when you are GOING to request them anyway. Although it'd be nice to know which songs are which so we can try to influence you about which songs are on which list ;)

It would seem to me , that this only happens because people want them!!

I agree 100%, people don't need to know which tracks are request only.. if they want ot hear them, they can request them.
