Giving pins, getting pins, a really fun and generous idea

Post by figmentaholic » Apr Sun 22, 2012 6:39 pm

I put this in the general resorts because it doesn't have to be done at Walt Disney World, although that is where I will be doing this next year.

As I have said before, Me, my husband, and a constantly changing amount of friends go to Disney every mid February. We always have different friends going, and sometimes friends who are local or semi-local to the area join us for a day or more.

So earlier this year, we had two friends of ours join us. They both live in Jax now but they lived in Orlando before, and one is a former cast member whose father is still a cast member- in the bus fleet.

I thought I knew a lot about Disney but my former CM friend was our expert for the two days that we had them.

And while we were with them, he pointed me out to something that I was amazed I had never thought of doing before, even in all my years of Disney visits.

He is a big pin collector and has a killer collection, but he always has extras and doubles. So he puts the extras in his pocket, not only so he can have them in case he sees a CM with something to trade (his specialty is Meeko pins) but..

...And this is the cool part...

If he sees a kid with a birthday button or a first visit button then he gives them a pin. GIVES it to them.

Why had I never thought of this before?

So, I went to Ebay and got a couple of lots of pins. And now when I go back next Feb (where the two friends will be joining us again) I will have lots of pins to trade for Figment pins and still have plenty to give away to make kids' days.

I just wanted to put this out here in the hopes that some more of you do the same thing. Even if you only give away one pin or two. I have seen how it makes a child's day, or their whole trip.

You might want to print up some little slips of paper with a blurb about putting a smile on a child's face, and passing it forward. You could give the note to the parents and then give the pin to the kid. Lots of skeptics out there and this way they would know you're not trying to run a scam or ask for something in return...

Well he didn't give out a bunch.. maybe just 2-4 each of the two days I saw them.. but there was never any problems with the adults that I saw. they were always happy and thanked him.
I guess I can talk to him about it, but I don't think he has ever had a problem that would necessitate having to do that, thankfully.

Well...I wasn't sure if he was passing them out while he was a CM or not. I just know people can be wary sometimes. I think it will be fun for the kids though.

I doubt he was doing it while he was a cast member. He hasn't been a CM for years now, I know he does it as a regular patron of WDW. :)

What a fab idea! If and when I go back to the parks, I'll keep this in mind (if I go to Guest Relations within a year like I'm hoping then it'll really work then). Lovely idea, so very Disney! :D

That is why I posted it here.. I am hoping that more people will take this idea and run with it.. and maybe someone will see you doing it at the park and start doing it themselves, and we can spread it around... spread the Disney Magic. The world needs more Disney Magic, right? :)

I actually do this on all of my trips already!! I usually will do it if I am on a bus or monorail and there is a kid with a lanyard. That way I know the parents will most likely be ok with it. I always start the day with a few princess pins, as well as a few cars/nemo pins. Ebay is great for this. I can usualy find 100 pins for $40-$50. The look on a kids face when they get a pin they like is priceless!
"hold on to them hats and glasses, cause this here's the wildest ride in the wilderness!!"
