Maybe its because our most lasting and strongest memories are based on the sensory impression, principally from touch, taste, and hearing. It's the reason you get that "tune stuck in your head" occassionally. Same with taste. It's why a particular food item tastes better from a certain location - there was a sense of joy attached to that memory of taste, so the experience was enhanced by that sensation. So when we return, we wish to re-experience that memory/sensation and hence traditions are created.
