I've never traded with guests or have had any come up to me to ask if they wanted to trade with me. There is no way I would want to trade any of the ones I have on my AP lapel. If I wanted to trade, I would most likely get doubles of what I currently have and put those on the other lapel to start trading just for fun.

My pin lanyard has about 20 on it all classic characters from the films, even the cast members stop me to have a look. I group them in their films and all mickeys together the only exceptions on the lanyard are a 2000 pin and an epcot 25th.

I like the look of Dr Ravenscroft's book for the larger pins, I have often liked the look of some of the larger ones but have never purchased as I find them to large for my lanyard.

I have only ever traded with a guest once and that was a little girl who stopped me in the stave church and really liked the turk pin I had, I was never able to replace the pin but it was worth the look on the little girls face when we traded, having read this forum though I really hope she wasn't fleeced out of it later by some seriously mad pin trader who needed that one for their collection.

One of these days I'll be purchasing the book that has all the pins that have been released. Since it's thirty bucks I'm sure I could get a discount with my AP. I looked through one for a short time in the Westward Trading Ho store and I was amazed at the variety of pins released in both WDW and DLR so I'd hope to get that book soon.

I assume it's like a catalog for $30.00 not an actual book with pins like what some of the other posters have added pictures for?

Oh yes, it's a catalog, that's right. I don't know if there are any books on Pin Trading but I'll keep a lookout.

Back when they first started selling pins, I remember looking at the displays and thinking "No way. I'm not paying that much for a pin. Plus that'd be a quick way to burn through my spending money fast."

2004 came around, and I saw a Scrooge McDuck pin and I had to buy it. I bought a Stitch pin for a friend, and decided I'd get me one too. Harmless enough, 2 pins for me.

Then in 2005, I bought about 13 pins. 2006, around 12 pins. And on and on. So much for my initial thought back in the day! I don't even know how many I have now, but I've sunk quite a bit of money into it. I keep my normal-sized ones in a pin bag from WDW. The jumbo pins I have I keep in their boxes. Looking through my bag now, I have at least 72 regular size pins, not including the boxes and boxes of VMK pins I have. I didn't even realize I had that many. I have 23 pins that are only of Donald or feature Donald with others.

I don't trade though. I just like buying the ones with meaning to me. Mainly I collect Donald pins, but I also buy special events/theme pins, resort pins and ride pins. I collect Stitch pins too, to a point.

I thought I was the only one who suffered that same problem. When they first came out, I laughed at it and only purchased one or two just as a momento for a certain attraction or the resort. Needless to say, I now have almost 4 full lanyards and some oversized pins.

I think I have about 40 pins in total, I mostly have HM and 5oth pins. That is about it, I don't go to the parks to trade. I just see one I like and I decide to buy it. of course the past 2 or 3 times I have gone I haven't bought any but that might have something to do with the fact that they hadn't come out with anything new that I would want.

You know you're going to start trading once you're at DL5. Don't try to deny it, Dr.

Actually no I won't, all my pins will be at home, and I doubt that I will be buying any new ones. So don't look for any trading from me this trip.

Our family has been buying pins for years. We don't wear them or trade, we just collect them. We probably have somewhere around 300. Resorts, attractions and events are mostly what we collect. We really haven't gotten too big into the characters yet.
If you have a weakness for pins, I would suggest that you stay away from ebay. You can do some real damage in a short amount of time.

That is about the same for me.. When I buy pins, I buy the ones that I want to keep. I really don't have a single one that I would want to trade, except for the couple that I accidentally got doubles of.
I have at least a couple dozen Figment pins, and I hope to expand that soon. Most were bought at the parks, but a few older or more rare ones I did get from eBay. I always do that very cautiously though. I know fakes are out there, but so far I have had very good luck.

On our trip last year, my kids and I each bought a lanyard and a few pins to trade just for fun (this was the first trip for my kids and our first experience with Disney pins) As our vacation days ticked by, we found we were buying pins because they each held a special memory (our favorite ride in the park, pins from the nighttime shows, our favorite characters....). When all was said and done, at the end of our trip, we each had about 20 pins of our favorite memories...none of which anyone wanted to trade.

I've never done pin trading, although a few of my siblings have. I'm a cheap-o by nature and I just never could justify spending that kind of money on little metal trinkets that are a nuisance to carry around the park anyway. The only pin I own is the "May 16 2008" Prince Caspian pin that I picked up to commemorate my being in Disneyland on PC's Opening Day. I've never taken it off the plastic backing and it now resides in my drawer until I can figure out what I want to do with it, lol!

So, what would you guys suggest would be the best way for a newbie to start? Buying in bulk on eBay? Is that a good way to start or am I getting someone else's throw aways?

What about Disney Stores? We have 2 near us so it's not out of the way.

I think I would like to have some before entering the parks. Especially for my kids. I would like to think they would enjoy trading a pin or two a day.
