Disney Castles

Sleeping Beauty's Castle at Disneyland is much smaller than Cinderella's Castle at WDW...

One of the reasons, reportedly, is that upon touring Europe (especially France) looking at old castles to design SBC for the opening of DL, Walt was told that lords built their castles large and tall so they would strike fear into the populace and make potential opponents think twice before taking on the power that lives there.

Walt, of course, decided this simply wouldn't do. So SBC is smaller, "cuter," more about charm than imposition and meant to be a welcoming sight, not an imposing one.

CC at WDW is meant to be seen... if only barely... from across the Seven Seas Lagoon. Therefore it is much, much larger.

I like them both, but Sleeping Beauty's Castle is Walt's castle.

I couldn't agree with you more. I like Sleeping Beauty's castle, especially when it was decorated for DL 50th Anniversary last year. It was beautiful. Although I am a little prejudice because I haven't seen Cinderella's castle, because I haven't been able to get back to WDW yet.

I love Cinderella Castle because it is Walt Disney World. It is the symbol of all the happiness I store up from that greatest place on earth.

On the other hand, I have a special place in my heart for Sleeping Beauty Castle. I just love it.

Now I've heard this alot, but, be honest, couldnt' that be a way to cover up for merely having more limited resources in the Anaheim days?

Howdy Mansion Butler,

Very interesting post. I personally liked SBC in Disneyland much better then Cinderella's Castle. I'm not sure why... Perhaps because it was the first castle. It feels more welcoming to me.

I like the MK castle in Orlando. It's big enough to see from all area of the park. In california it gets lost in the park when you are in differant areas.

Yeah, but it seemed so much larger before going to Orlando...

However the thing that will always blow all of the other castles out of the water is the fact that Walt was actually there. I love that pic inspecting the park, and he is in the door way of Sleeping Beauty Castle.

Disneyland is the Happiest Place on Earth!!!!

The DLRP castle is very cool. Did you know there is a dragon sleeping under the castle?

Although I've always wonder why Belle got rouged out of the DLRP castle.

Well they had to build that castle bigger because the people in Europe actually have castles, and Disney's plastic version wouldn't cut it unless it was big.

In 2005, I was lucky enough to go to DL in the spring and WDW in late summer. Having been to WDW many times before that, my first impression when I turned onto Main Street in DL was "Where's the castle?" Oh.... there it is! What it lacks in height, though, it makes up in beauty and historical significance. I was very impressed with it. Of course, when I went to WDW a few months later, seeing Cindy's castle as I walked down Main Street took my breath away. Again. The castles are just so different and I'm glad Walt didn't recreate DL's castle at WDW.

I don't think that the SB castle would've worked in WDW, cause MK in WDW is twice the size of DLR. just due to the size of the park, a smaller castle wouldn;t do. They wanted the castle to be the focal point of the park, able to bee seen from just about anywhere.

Apparently the Disneyland castle and the Hong Kong castle are replicas of one another. 8)

Ok, I LOVE the castle at WDW... Because I've actually VISITED the castle it was based on! My Husband and I just recently got back from Munich (where we went to Oktoberfest.. as well as visited various places in Bavaria) and I can see WHY Cinderella's castle was based on Neuschwanstein (pronounced Noysh -van - schtein). http://www.castles.org/castles/Europe/C ...
