Again... I hope you realize that if someone really wants to hurt a lot of people in a place like a theme park, no amount of "bag checks" will stop them...

Exactly!! My favorite saying is "where there's a will, there's a way". That basically means there is no way to stop someone from doing anything. I do agree that something needs to be there to deter some of the stuff that happens but bag checks are a waste of time and resources.

I remember having a conversation like this with someone who'd gone right after bag checks were implemented and asking him what they were like. His response was they were a pain but you "felt really safe once you were in the parks". Struck me as odd at the time because I'd always felt safe in the parks before that anyway.

Having been through many a check now myself, I have to agree that I don't think they really do anything other than take up time and make the front entrance of the MK ugly. I remember walking up toward the entrance the first time they'd started 'funneling' everyone to enter a particular way and being saddened by it being there (and not just because it's a longer walk from the bus...).

I suppose they felt they had to do -something- though and I admit I can't think of another way to do it either. It's a shame it even has to be an issue. :(

Well, they need to be like Six Flags. They have area for people with no bags to enter in. Which makes it go by faster.
Love Tomorrowland and Adventureland, but hard to decide to which one is best.

I'm thinking there are probably more families going into WDW/DL with kids/strollers/diaper bags/bags with all that stuff you apparently carry around when you have smaller kids, too. (Versus Six Flags, I mean - just a guess as I've never been to a Six Flags but I think 'roller coasters' when I think of them.) The 'no bags' lines at WDW, from what I ever saw, didn't get a lot of use.

I agree with Subsonic. The system does seem almost silly. I'm curious what, if anything a cast member might actually do if something dangerous were discovered. Would the company allow a confrontation? I doubt it. If they really want to ensure security they should at lest have metal detectors but talk about slowing things down! What Disney should do in these dangerous times we find ourselves in, is develop an entirely new technology. One that is quick, reliable and could be implemented in the real world. You know, the whole concept of EPCOT. Design and develop new, cutting edge technologies that have real world applications.

We were at WDW in the early 1990's when security was checking most everyone that walked through the gates. My young son had cancer and was in a wheelchair. Security stopped us and went through our bags! Now, don't get me wrong I can appreciate the fact they want a 'safe' experience for all. But, I was bringing my son to the Happiest Place On Earth!

Um... I went to WDW in 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993 (twice!), 1994, & 1995 (takes care of the first half of the 90s)... and we never got searched by security, ever.

Well, you were lucky. We too, were at WDW 6 times during 90, 91 & 92. Then once a year during 93, 94. 95.96 & 97. The early 90's visit was during Desert Storm. Which I could understand but checking a little boy with cancer.... :mickey:

I had never experienced bad bag check lines until 2005.
Even during our 2000 and 2001 visits (2001 in October none the less), nothing to cry home about.

2005 - HORRENDOUS!!!

I find it interesting how all of us think it's a waste of time, doesn't help, and is simply a joke.

Someone send Disney here to read this.

My issues is, it either needs to be valuable or not take my time. With so many guests trying to squeeze through a small space, the security folks try to be quick by not really paying attention, yet you still wait forever due to volume.

So, they come across as not caring or not thorough, but don't make it feel like they're saving you time.

I think they are trying to make sure no one brings in alcohol, glass bottles or bombs as someone said in a earlier response. But in this day and age of our time, if you can't wait in a line to have your backpack checked then you shouldn't go anywhere. I am not trying to be mean, but I would much rather have it there, I guess it does give me a false sense of security, but I rather take the 5 or 10 minutes out of my day to do it then not. I guess it has just become commonplace since 9/11.

I think that you can complain all you want, but it will do you no good, since it is probably not going to stop just because you complain about it. You have to remember that it is your vacation and you are supposed to be in relax mode, so just relax, and you will still get on all the rides and see all the shows you want anyway, what is a few extra minutes out front. I am just as excited as the next person to get inside, but it isn't going to kill me to wait a few extra minutes to get there.
