I asked him what it was he said "they say it's portuguese but it's not! Only people from Portugal speak portuguese!"
Having worked with an International College Program CM from Portugal, I can tell you it is Portuguese Brazilians speak. He had no problem communicating with the BTGs (Brazilian Tour Groups). In other words, they couldn't use the language barrier to screw the guests in the other lines. They shut up real quick knowing they'd be using the Single Rider Line like everyone else the way it is supposed to be used.
I think k-carts was talking about a form of snobbery the people of Portugal have about the portuguese spoken by the Brazilians, as if its a "mongrel" version of the language. I knew some from Spain that had that attitude about the Spanish spoken by those from Mexico.

It's all true, you know. The Spaniards do look down on all the various other dialects of "Spanish" spoken throughout the latin countries of the world, and no doubt the folks from Portugal do the same for the "corrupted" version of Portugese spoken in Brazil (it has a lot of "Spanish" influences in it). Heck, we should understand that principal very well: New Yorkers look down on the "English" spoken by Southerners, and Southerners make fun of the "English" spoken by New Yorkers, etc. etc., and the British make fun of all of us! So no big surprise there, if you ask me.

By the way, for the record, I've known folks from just about every "Spanish-speaking" country on the map, and the Brazilians I've known have usually been very nice people who were also bilingual with Portugese and Spanish (trilingual actually... English too). I used to love listening to them speak Portugese, and always said that it's such a beautiful language that when I master Spanish (if ever...) I would next like to learn Portugese. They are similar in many ways... both being Latin-based and all.... Imagine the best/prettiest/sexiest sounds of Spanish mixed with the best/prettiest/sexiest sounds of French, and you would have Portugese... speaking strictly about how pleasant it sounds to the ear. I just don't know what's wrong with those crazy tour groups from Brazil... they turn into monsters when they get in the parks. Must be a Rio de Janeiro carnival-mentality thing....

Oh, I know what he was talking about. I'm just saying that however people from Portugal feel about Brazilians, they'll have no problem trying to talk to Brazilians in Portuguese.
We are all a little weird
And life's a little weird,
And when we find someone whose
Weirdness is compatible with ours,
We join up with them and fall in
Mutual weirdness and call it Love.”

I was saying there are subtleties to every language. For instance, when I hear the word 'cabinet' I think of something I keep my dishes and cereal in in my kitchen. My friends from Rhode Island might think of a milk shake. Or what we call here in Massachusetts, a frappe.

That's a shame, I wish there was. I am usually a single rider every time I ride it (most of the people I go with chicken out...)
Me too :( Although my Mom doesn't chicken out, I don't think she cares to ride it in the first place

Rhode Islanders call a milk shake a cabinet? Why the heck is that?

That's pretty much true for every language, since geography divided a population the dialects develop and small changes are made. More conservative members would then say that it isn't the true version. UK hates the US version of english, France isn't wild on Quebec's version/accent, no one likes Wales, etc. :D

Sort of like the way Romania got it's name. You know the Romans were there that long!

What did Churchill say about this? "England and America, two nation divided by a common language"!

Some refer to the Boston accent as the "King's English".

Still can't figure why the rest of the country insists on using those pesky "R"s.

I can't figure that one out either?

Quick story that the Boiler's may find amusing.....

My buddy worked in Chicago for a little more than a year. When he was coming back he was looking to get rid of some furniture. He asked around at work if anyone needed a bureau. Everyone politely declined. Not knowing what a bureau was. Someone finally came back and asked him what the heck he was talking about. He explained it's the thing with drawers that you keep clothes in. None of his co-workers out there had ever heard it referred to as a bureau.

Just kidding. I'm not a native Texan, so I don't have the accent anyway.
