So many times I think a picture looks horrible on the camera screen, but when I view it on the computer screen it looks cool...and that works the other way around too. Some pics look good on the camera but terrible on the computer!
I've noticed that very same thing![/quote]

I TOTALLY agree! My husband often shoots and then deletes and it drives me bonkers. You just can't tell very much from those tiny screens.

That is incredible lighting there, Joe. Do you keep it on the manual setting?

This was taken with an Olympus FE120 set for night pics. Everything is auto.
I did place the camera on a railing and used the countdown timer, just to keep things steady.

Ah, I have a Canon Powershot SD1100 SI and I tend to keep everything on the manual setting so I can get the natural colors.

Do you like your camera? I am trying to decide between a Nikon or a Canon for my next "nice" camera...

Oh, I love my camera so much. I used both Nikon and Canon, though for the digital cameras it were all Canons. I prefer Canon over anything else since I'm used to them.

I have just been given a Canon EOS 500D to do all the manual photo taking.
It is taking forever to get used to all the menus and sub menus and different settings.
Luckily it can also do the full auto thing

How is that camera? I've been wanting to try a bigger kind of camera like that but I didn't know which kind to get.

Another fantastic photo Joe! Keep them coming!!!

For night and telephoto shooting I had brought the 30D on our recent vacation. Unfortunately the only pictures I managed to take with it were from the terrace of our room and at Animal Kingdom. Other than that, it was too hot to take it the first few days and the last few days were too rainy to risk taking it. However, if you got the 500D, you need to play with the manual settings. I have found that playing around with manual settings will really help you get better pictures. The auto mode doesn't always do it best.

elizabethswann: I like the SD1100 IS a lot. It came from the same line that my SD970IS is from and I love my P&S a lot. It has survived snow, heat, humidity, rain, and Niagara Falls.

Does anyone have a tip on the best settings for evening use?

My old camera had the ability to set it for night, fireworks, etc. But the one I have now is a little less user-friendly and has more settings that I can set in manual except the problem is I don't really know which settings are best for which situations.

I always keep mine on a manual setting since I'm able to keep the natural colors in the photo. The only thing is is that I have to use a potential tripod if I want to get good shots so that they won't get blurry. I also have a night snapshot setting but since it uses flash, it doesn't keep everything in the photo that I want.
