Bambi's Mom (spoilers!)

So I am watching Bambi tonight, and something was not sitting right with me.
I mean, why would a hunter harvest a doe, when there is a good selection of bucks around, not to mention this great 12-point trophy buck known to us as the Great Prince of the Forest? If you know any hunters, you would know this is odd behavior indeed.
Then I saw the scene in question. Bambi's mother is shot the day that they find the first spring grass. Even though it is snowing, they are WAY out of Deer Season.
BAMBI'S MOTHER WAS SHOT BY A POACHER.
This makes it all the more tragic in my eyes.
