A Disney Radio?

Post by Wizzard419 » May Sun 18, 2014 12:14 pm

This was brought up elsewhere, it is a consumer electronics prototype for a radio that would play jungle cruise music.

Now, if the price is too high, you could always just buy the actual radio for about $50 and do some mods. :D

Fandom makes people stupid...

For those that like the radio itself (or want to make their own) you can buy it on amazon.

Plus, I'm sure you could find an audio file floating around with the loops for WDW and DLR...

This feels like a scam to me. As Wizz pointed out, the radio is sold on the web. Nowhere in the eBay ad does it say that it is a Disney-produced prototype and I doubt Disney would use an off-the-shelf radio. But the ad and the price seem to suggest this is somehow Disney-sanctioned.

TPC is one of the surplus houses Disney dumps their stuff into regularly, so they have that cred.

The use of the off the shelf model for the prototype might have been just a proof of concept prototype to give an idea of look and feel rather than a final product. They also do note it was produced by Disney parks as possible merch featuring relevant original and licensed audio from an attraction.

Maybe so on TPC but to nitpick - it says "This radio was made as a prototype for a possible merchandise item to be sold in the Disney Parks". It doesn't say it was produced BY Disney. As far as anybody can tell, this could be a third party product from a supplier hoping to sell this in the parks. It doesn't even say it is the only one, and the word "prototype" could mean many things.

If I am being kind, I'd say the listing is poorly worded. If I am being honest, it feels misleading at least.

But where would they get the radio announcer audio? :D

It's not like they would come in with stuff they downloaded off the net.

Though, thinking back, park merch (esp ride specific ones) are usually developed in-house (look up Kevin Kidney and Jody Daily) by contractors rather than taking in unsolicited items. Just for reference, most of the imagineers are also just contract and float between US and a few other parks/projects.

LOL, yeah.

Bottom line - I'd never pay that kind of money for something I could build myself for <$100.

Looks like this was supposed to be a series of radios. Here is one for Tower of Terror. I wonder if they had original versions or if they were using processed audio like they use in the ride to make the room sound larger?

Oh man, now I know this isn't legit. Can you imagine a bunch of these on the shelf, each identical except for what loop they have loaded? What are you supposed to do, collect them all?! A sane person would want the ability to switch between "programs".

I would imagine, if it were to go into production, they would actually have custom designs produced to reflect the attractions. I'm thinking these would be collectable items (aka limited edition), where they would have a high price to cover production and royalties and a low production number since few would actually want one.

Can't imagine it would be a very large series though, taking into consideration the number of attractions that appear at both DLR and WDW and use area loops comprised of needle-drop music (as opposed to original works/in-house covers).
