Okay now Disney 3-D is getting ridiculous

Movies, TV, music, and more. Here's the place to talk about anything Disney outside of the parks.

Okay now Disney 3-D is getting ridiculous

Post by wxwiz » Oct Wed 05, 2011 12:32 am

After the recent success of Lion King 3D in theatres, now Disney plans to release Beauty and the Beast, Finding Nemo in 2012, and Monster Inc, Little Mermaid in 2013.

Since when did Disney become George Lucas :(

Hollywood is getting so lazy and greedy IMO.

3-D is definitely the hot new way to release movies. Maybe it will help new generations come to love the same Disney we all grew up with though :D

It's a matter of recovering the cost of the 3D conversion: re-release it into the theatres. That way, when it comes to releasing the 3D blu-ray, the costs have been recovered with the short-run theatre run. This isn't new. When Snow White was being restored for its eventual DVD release, Disney released it in the theatres to get their costs back for the restoration before the eventual DVD release. Also, these short-runs in the theatre can help boost the DVD/blu-ray sales.

If I recall, they earned 80-90 million so far on the lion king re-release and the costs of conversion are far lower, plus they can cash in on nostalgia (multiple times now that many may have children). Not a bad return since all the work was post-production.

LOL, I think I read somewhere that the multiple re-releases of the Nightmare Before Christmas in 3D had done more in the box office than the original 1993 release...

I can take it or leave it. Personally, 3D makes me ill to watch unless it's short so I don't go.

But I do think it's kind of stupid to keep releasing them this way... when did 2D movies become obsolete? 3D is too expensive for me to go see anyway, I could see three 2D movies here for the price of 2 3D ones- four 2Ds if I do matinee!

I heard about that on the Disney facebook page and I'm not happy by it. 3D is too ridiculous, expensive and I hate it so much.

Funny thing, the cost you pay (it's only about a dollar more here but elsewhere I've heard it's up to $8 more) for the 3D has nothing to do with the cost of the glasses. Aside from the majority being returned, the studios pay for the glasses (though now Sony announced they were no longer going to pay) so now the theaters will have to start paying for them.

If you are the only one that doesn't want to see it in 3D but don't want/can't handle the movie, just wear a pair of polarized sunglasses. I forgot to take mine off and found that they are a match for one side of the glasses (rendering it a 2D movie again).

Thank you!! I will have to remember that when I get dragged to see this crap! I, for one, am not of fan of 2D movies rendered to 3D!! Is there anything that Disney does anymore that's not on the cheap???? :x

It's $15 here for 3D- $7 for matinee 2D and $10 for regular 2D. It's ridiculous. Add that to the insane gas prices AND even movie theatre food and who the heck is going to go see these movies anyway?

If I recall, imax 3D doesn't have the upcharge, but that may also vary.

As for who goes to see them, I'm guessing parents, their children and children's friends, and creepy men that drive in windowless vans filled with candy and puppies. :D

Actually, I was wondering how Wizz was driving around in the van if it had no windows...

...and I just don't see Wizz as a "puppy person".
