A new way to D23.

Movies, TV, music, and more. Here's the place to talk about anything Disney outside of the parks.

A new way to D23.

Post by figmentaholic » Apr Fri 22, 2011 1:30 pm

I was listening to the "Inside the Magic" podcast and they mentioned that they now have 2 levels of D23 membership. the normal 75 dollar and the new 35 dollar level that has everything except the magazine, which is fine with me. I am sure the magazine is nice but I don't need it for an extra 40 bucks.

So, just a thought, if you guys want to D23 and not spend 75 bucks, there is an alternative. So now I can say that I am 23!

I just thought I would tell all you guys who maybe were hesitant to be a D23 member before. Now is a better, cheaper way to join!

The only problem with the lower level is it still isn't necessarily a good deal for those of us that live far away from any of the parks, especially DL, since that seems to be where most of the D23 events are held.

However, on the plus side....I have noticed that D23 has been making an attempt to spread their wings. True, many events take place in CA, but there have been several events this year in other parts of the country. I think after the first year, they realized that there was a large amount of members who could not take advantage of any of the events. I know it was something I personally mentioned to the D23 folks at the 1st Anniversary.
I believe they are trying to work on that and I was surprised to find several events so far this year were elsewhere...we shall see how things go as the club embarks on its third year of existence.

For now, we are proudly D23 members! :)

I wonder if one of the reasons they do so many D23 things, not a member but saw the events they did on their site, in So Cal is that there are more local AP holders here than in Florida and there are also more "Historic" things (such as studio tours and whatnot), which D23 seems to be big on.

They could do special events nationwide, like having advance screenings of films that only D23 members can buy the tickets. This kind of an event doesn't have to be tied to the parks, and can be done in multiple cities all over.

Hmmm... I'm not sure if enough people would go for something like that. Just being able to see a movie after test screenings and before general public isn't that big a draw (for most blockbusters it's quite easy to do for free anyway since they always have screenings for free the week or two before). They would have to add a lot more to merit a premium.

...nor do I imagine they would do it without some D23 exclusive merchandising tied in to boot...

Hmmm... actually if you made it so that they would have "special limited edition merch. opportunities" then you could sell a normal movie ticket at a premium.

I live on the east coast, but I am still close to 9 hours away from WDW so I didn't really join to go to the events. I doubt where I live I will ever get to one. But I do believe that D23 members can get benefits when they do go to the parks, small percentages off things, right? Or am I wrong?

It doesn't look like they get discounts on disney merch (unless there is a special offer), they get other limited time discounts. My guess is that it helps encourage people to buy and AP and a D23 card so they can get more savings!

There are merch and food discounts, but I don't think any of these are within the parks.
