I guess it's fair to let the poor man retire after 53 years, but it makes me sad anyway. He's the only living person who's been with the company for the opening of all the theme parks. It's the end of an era.

Very sad indeed, but I don't think we can be too harsh on him for retiring after 53 years with the company. It is amazing that somebody can be that loyal and dedicated for so many years.

I'm with Len on that. You don't see many people hanging onto their job for so long nowadays.

Indeed. That'd be why I said "end of an era". Though given how old he is... entering the workforce 50-odd years ago, I guess it wasn't as unusual for people starting back then.

Regardless, it's always sad to see more of the old guard go. There can't be that many left who worked with Walt himself.

Very true Caroline. I admire and respect Marty very much and hope that he will at least be around the company in some form, like a consultant or advisor.

Oh, this is so sad! But, I guess he would not be going unless he was ready. I hope he has trained his team to take up where he is leaving off..... Like passing it on.

I had the good fortune to attend a symposium at The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn Michigan at the opening of "Behind the Magic:50 Years of Disneyland" where Marty was one of the speakers.

For me it was the most fascinating hour of the day long program. The stories and insights he related about the opening of Disneyland were truly amazing.

Best wishes to him as he retires.

I would have to imagine that Marty will still be used in some sort fashion..probably a consultant.

Or be "allowed" to stay that many years. Ya know, in this world of budget cuts and layoffs and such...

I have been blessed to hear Marty speak. A few years ago, a travelling train show was passing through Atlanta and they had a section dedicated to Disneyland and the history of Walter Elias Disney and his fascination with trains.

When I downloaded the Modern Marvels episode on Disney, my kids instantly remembered Marty as the man who gave the lecture that rainy Sunday afternoon.

Just imagine what he has seen and heard, and who he has worked with for the last 53 years!
