Whatnot

Post by Esmeralda » Dec Tue 02, 2008 3:31 pm

Alright all you east-coasters, it's time to make a pilgrimage to your local FAO Schwartz in NYC. Yes, now you can create your very own Muppet Whatnot! It's the real deal with your choice of color, eyes, hair...you get the idea. Sure wish I had a cool $130 to spend for my very own!
Drop another coin in slot and I will tell you more.

Seriously? Man, I wish I lived in NYC for that. I did visit FAO when I visited NYC in July but I would love to make one of these things!

I read about that. Staring in February, you can build one on their website. Why couldn't they have had this 20 years ago when I was a kid?

They had an online designer/purchase thing up for a while a few weeks ago (with, like, 90% of the parts sold out already or otherwise unavailable on the first day), but it seems they've taken that down. Probably 'cause they finally ran out of parts for the moment, I guess.

It looked very cute.

The link to the original Muppet builder on FAO's website:
http://www.fao.com/custsvc/custsvc.jsp?sectionId=608

Video of how to build one:
http://www.fao.com/catalog/boutique.jsp ... goryId=793

But since the got hit with over 2000 people per minute trying to build a muppet they had to shut it down until February. I think they are going to either wait until they have more server space, or they are going to wait until people forget about it and then release the site after there is less demand. Either way you have to wait.

Thank you for the video link Dr. Ravenscroft. I had no clue what a whatnot was until viewing the video. I used to watch muppets as a kid and couldn't figure out why I didn't know what one was. Now that I know it sure would be cool to make one to have for your own.

Hmm, we always take a day trip to the city every year around the holidays. It is relatively close to the World of Disney so I might look into this.

FAO is still open in NYC? Last time I was in NYC, they were going out of business and were selling everything in the store, there was almost nothing left. and that was in August of 2005 (I think, it was several years ago at least).

The Muppet thing sounds cool, in any case.

I played around with this when the website was still working properly. I would've loved one, but there wasn't enough variety for me. I couldn't come up with a Whatnot that I actually wanted to buy. I knew what colors I wanted, but they were only available for a certain "body" type, I didn't like the colors of the eye shapes I liked, same problem for noses, etc.

Hopefully when they bring it back, they'll have more options. Otherwise, sadly, I won't be buying one.
