Disney is converting its (mostly) hand-drawn animated classic Beauty and the Beast to 3-D digital, with plans to release it in 2010, studio executives disclosed Tuesday at a 3-D technology festival in Singapore. The studio plans to apply its proprietary digital 3-D technology to the original background, effects and character elements, much as it did to its newest release, Bolt, which premieres on Friday. The entire conversion process is expected to take about nine to ten months. The studio also intends to release 3-D versions of Toy Story 2 and 3 in 2010 as well as the all-new Disney/Pixar feature Rapunzel. Disney said today (Wednesday) that it will also release five movies in 3-D IMAX in 2009-2010, beginning with A Christmas Carol, starring Jim Carrey, in November 2009.
... this 3D remake thing is starting to get out of hand.
Original story
here, though I copied the whole thing up there ^.

...Are you kidding me? It's bad enough that Toy Story is going to be in 3D but now Beauty and the Beast? I do not approve of this.

Meh...if they could figure out a way to do 3D without having to use those goofy-looking, flimsy 3d glasses that seems to not fit anyone, then maybe it would be a little better. Now I'm not looking forward as much to these movies, unless there is a non-3D option.

I just hope Beauty and the Beast is one that is released in IMAX (hopefully not 3-D), I missed it a couple years ago when it was released in IMAX. That would be awesome. I did see the Lion King and it is amazing in IMAX.

Yea, i think the 2D classics need to remain the way they are. There is no need whatsoever to convert a work of art into 3D. Then again I guess we will have to wait and see how they will go about doing this. Should be interesting to see.

I may have simply not understood that article, so if this is redundant, forgive me. Is this going to be 3D like they did the old Donald Duck and Chip and Dale cartoon a few years ago that was before Meet the Robinsons, I think it was? If so, that wasn't bad at all, it was quite neat. It still looked the same, it just had more dimension to it, for lack of a better word.
If it's going to suddenly look like a Pixar movie, however, I am not impressed or pleased.

I'm not 100% clear on that myself, actually. The fact that they included 'character elements' makes me think 3D more along the lines of what they did to Nightmare Before Christmas, but I'm not familiar with the exact process they're talking about. I sincerely hope it will not be the kind of thing that involves the glasses.
That aside though, I think sub's right here. "This makes money. Squeeze it and see if more coins will fall out."

im sure it will just be regualar 3d, no actual redoing of the artwork. im just excited to get to see it theaters, as i was 4 when it came out the first time, and have only watched it at home. its one of my favorites. it also comes out in bluray in 2010 , which is absolutely amazing if you have never had the chance to see!

I saw B&B in IMAX and it was great. Funny thing - some of the details are not fully fleshed out when the artists assume the they will not get blown up to a certain size. For instance, when Belle first walks into the castle in the dark and the camera shot is from way overhead, she looks up and her face is just two dots for eyes and a little line for a mouth, like a smiley face. I never forgot that!

BatB in 3D should be interesting. I'll give it a shot and watch it when it comes out.

Nooooooooo! I'm mainly upset because I thought they were just "taking it out of the vault" in 2010! I missed out on the last time they released in on DVD because my parents thought I was joking when I asked for it for Christmas.

Yeah!
I owned B&B on VHS tape when I was younger, but the cassette is now mysteriously missing... I can't wait until they re-release it on DVD!

I thought they already re-released it on DVD...?
Anyway, this might be worth checking out when it comes to theaters. I heard that Disney is putting a lot of money and work into a new type of 3D of which the name is escaping me at the moment. Monster's vs. Aliens (though not Disney) will be released in this format, and I'm pretty sure that the Disney re-releases will be this way as well.
