VMK being closed May 21 - online petition
Disney's VMK may be closing, and my 12 year old daughter asked me to set up an online petition. Please visit and support it.

I'm really sad that VMK is being shut down. While I can understand that it's initial purpose was to enhance the 50th's marketing campaign, it quickly grew to a fun standalone game all its own. Neither Pirates online nor Toontown online have that same "it" factor that VMK has (nor are they very fun. yawn!) I really hope they reconsider.

I agree. I do not think that Disney Corporation expected people to become real friends or families across the nation and even the globe to keep in touch playing VMK.
I am very sad about this. I "glove" my VMK. I do hope they reconsider. I do not think they will change their minds, though. I would be happy to give them money if they would go pay-to-play. Besides, I do not want to be a toon, fat penguin or ugly pirate. I want to continue being a pretty little girl with pink hair.

Interesting, you would think if it's as popular and widely used as it appears, they'd want to maintain it. Direct marketing tool to their audience.

Unfortunately, it seems to make sense from a marketing perspective. Let me first note that I signed the petition before I continue.
All the people likely to inhabit the site are already Disney fans. Will Disney really see any return on their investment for maintaining this site? It's not as though anyone currently active on VMK will no longer visit the properties or purchase merchandise or movies if the site is not maintained.
I agree that it's a big let-down, but logic and economics seem pretty clear on this one...

To do the improbable, we first have to dream the impossible.

I thought there was some serious missed potential there. It would have been so much cooler if they provided a map of the actual park, and then maybe combined the things you could do in the game with real-life park elements. I know they did a tiny little bit of this, but the potential here was huge and I found the game to be pretty boring once I'd played for about 30 minutes.
In fact, my first thought when I heard Disney had made a VMK was "GENIUS!" and I had a glimmer of hope that Disney was again thinking outside the box and getting on track.
Imagine if they kept adding more of WDW, so you could watch the fireworks from the roof of the Contemporary or the water pageant from the beach at the Poly. It could have been so freakin' cool, and fueled nice dreams for years to come.
Oh well.

I am heart broken over this decision, seems like it happend rather hastily on disney's part. I am going to miss my blue haired girl
