Fantasia at the Hollywood Bowl

Post by slotofkit » Aug Mon 21, 2006 9:50 pm

I thought I'd share about something I got to experience this last weekend: A live version of Fantasia at the Hollywood Bowl. It was awesome! The link to the event that I went to is here (for however long it lasts): http://www.hollywoodbowl.com/tix/perfor ... fm?id=2671.
John Mauceri, the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra conductor, is leaving the Bowl soon and wanted to do this event as one of his last. He wanted to keep it in the form of Walt's original idea that Fantasia would keep changing with new pieces.
So, they premiered 3 new segments to the existing Sorceror's Apprentice, Nutcracker, Pastoral Symphony, Dance of the Hours, Rite of Spring and Toccata And Fugue In D Minor. The 3 new segments were Clare De Lune (which I believe was restored and put on DVD), the storyboard-like version of Swan of Tuonela, and a newly done version of Destino (which Walt Disney collaborated with Salvador Dali to storyboard).
It was amazing to think that Fantasia is still going strong with Walt's original dream for it. The Pastoral Symphony and Rite of Spring were even done as a medley to shorten both segments and contrast their versions of what nature is like. The Nutcracker segment was the finale which culminated in fireworks. The audience gave a standing ovation as it was incredible to have the orchestra perform live and very in synch with the film. There was even an encore with the Bumblebee Boogie segment from Melody Time.
It was wonderful to see as Flight of the Bumblebee was originally intended for Fantasia (and it is one of my personal favorite segments out of various Disney films). I'll try to put up some pictures up at a site as soon as I can!

That sounds very cool.

I got to see the San Diego Pops many moons ago and it was a blast. The coolest part was if I turned backwards on the bleachers I could see the fireworks going off at Sea World. Nothing like a huge orchestra playing powerful music. :)

Maybe consider breaking up long paragraphs like that up in the future. My eyes get lost at night in such a mess of words. :)
