That would definitely require a creative Imagination.

Tie-dye

Post by cy1229 » Apr Wed 18, 2012 2:29 pm

I couldn't think of where else to put this topic, this seemed as good a place as any.

We tie-dyed some shirts for our upcoming Disney trip. These are some of the results:

I'm not outrageously thrilled with Mom's (the next one) because the head didn't come out so great:

Wow ~ your tie-dye shirts look a whole lot better than mine came out! I'm impressed! Did you use the floss method to make the Mickey design, or something else?
You might actually want to pm one of the mods and have them move this over to the Creative Disney Crafting thread over in the Anything Else section. Here's the link... viewtopic.php?f=12&t=6509

We used rubber bands and string, in combination. I think the key to getting good, bright colors is to use reactive dyes. They form a chemical bond with the cellulose in the fabric. I can nerd out on you and explain it if you'd like. :)

Oh, we were just a few days away from leaving when I made ours so I used rubber bands and crayons. I also just used a tie-dye kit that I purchased so the dyes probably weren't as fancy as the ones you used. They did make my hands a pretty shade of blue when I rinsed out the shirts though  Nah, I'm good on the chemical explanation...

When I was teaching I used to tie-dye every year with my classes right before spring break. It was fun, and a good application of chemistry. Of course, I told them how it works. :)

LOL we've been thinking about selling tie-dyed shirts this summer at our local "Freedom Festival." Not Mickey shirts, mind you, just shirts in general. So if we decide to do that this summer, then yeah, I'll take some orders (gratis of course) as long as we have the dyes mixed. :)
