Thanks for the negative split explanation boilerbabe :)

The longest distance I have run is 55 miles. :)
I was still a teenager (just) and it was over half a lifetime ago.
I also did a couple of Marathons around the same time.

Nothing over 5 miles from then until I started the training for this Marathon.
Longest training run on my build up was just over 20 miles.
This took around 3 hours with mile times fairly consistent around the 8:35 to 8:55 mark, I felt fine when I finished.

There are MUCH better training shoes nowadays and that gloopy Gel stuff (Blea) to make the whole thing easier. The tech clothing is also a huge advance on cotton T shirts.

Will post pics of my medal and will accost someone with a Donald and Goofy and get pics of those as well

Hey Guys

Last Saturday I did an eight mile training run (I'm in the taper runs now) and felt great, then Sunday morning IT got me. I have been out a few days, sick (great idea just before a race!!). It seems someone at my family get-togethers decided to share at least one germ with me (it's the thought that counts - right).

There is also a loud whine in my aircraft's headset now (it's me).

I wish I could take "Super Deluxe Cold Stopper" and still fly my airplane, maybe I would be well now.

Oops, whining again...

Hope you feel better soon withspirit!!! Take lotsa Vit. C and push fluids (like you don't already know this!) You've done your training, and even if you're not up to par at the moment, the training will pay off, you should be o.k!

55 miles?!?!?! That's impressive Joe90!!! WOW! My longest distance is 18, with the injuries and set backs I've had, I would just love to do another 1/2 someday. I'm taking baby steps right now!

You're moving at a 8:35-8:55 pace, that's impressive as well! Sounds like you've done your homework, I wish all of you the best of luck! I'm with you in spirit! I live for road races! 8-)

I agree, the apparel and shoes today are amazing! What is everyone's shoe of choice?!

Take it easy withspirit, if you have done all the build up the training you will be ok to miss some of the taper runs. Get well before you run.

boilerbabe, keep taking baby steps, take enough of them and you will do 13.1 miles :) Run walk perhaps? Looking at the generous time limits (16 mins a mile) you could probably walk walk and still be OK

If I was running one mile I can still do it in around 6 mins. Just the one though and I need oxygen and a defibrillator at the finish. The people who finish first in the Marathon are FASTER than this on every singe one of the 26.2 miles they do  Seriously impressive.

As for shoes, I over pronate and am ...err.. a bit heavier than the "ideal" and I run on lots of hard surfaces, so a shoe with lots of support and padding. Asics Kayanos for me.

Thanks Guys, I am feeling better today.

Wow Joe90, you run faster at every mile than I do at any of them! I am in the just-ahead-of-swept, 14:30/mile, group. I am just glad Disney doesn't have a faster required time  .

I am a fan of the Asics shoe also. My wife and I both run in Gel 1140s. She is considering a near-barefoot shoe for the future, but hasn't made a purchase yet.

B-babe and B-dude, we will be looking for you in 2011. My wife is a member of another Disney Running Forum group and we are meeting for ice cream before the race. This has become an annual event for this group. I got included because spouses were invited in the first meeting. I said I would never run then, but somehow...

(still wondering how my wife did that????)

Whenever I hear about the Sweepers I have a mental image of the sweeps from Mary Poppins and those mops from Fantasia dancing along at the back of the Marathon ushering the people that fall out the back onto a bus. I'm sure it isn't that much fun :(

My view is that it a run not a race so if you finish in 2:20:00 or 6:59:59 it is the fact you finish that counts most, not the time you finish in. You get the same medal :)

There is no way to get photos with the characters AND a fast finishing time. If you run and take pictures they tend to be a little blurred, so you have to stop now and again.

Is there another Marathon anywhere in the World where so many runners carry cameras??

I agree with you Joe90, if you finish a race, you've finished, doesn't matter how fast you've gotten there, you've accomplished alot! Everyone has their own goals and reasons for being there! Good luck to you all! I wish I was going as well. Maybe 2011?! That would be awesome. I have that runner mentality so a walk/run doesn't work for me. I'm stubborn like that I guess? I just signed up last night for the Chicago Shamrock Shuffle, it's an awesome race with 30,000 runners! An 8K, so this is a good way for me to build. Thanks for the encouragement Joe90!

I wear Asics as well! 8-) They have been my fav. shoe for alot of years now! I love the Gel Kayanos! I'm flat footed and they work well with my orthotics.

And withspirit...my DH never ran distance but somehow now I've got him doing 5K's. :D

I know no other marathon/1/2 marathon where you carry a camera. Although I didn't, I don't like running with anything in my hands and I don't like to stop!!!!

I have a batman like utility belt, Gel, hat, water, sunscreen, anti-chaff stuff, plasters, camera, music player, headphones, boomerangs and smoke grenades....perhaps not the last couple:)..but you get the idea. I have been training with it from the beginning of the year. It is quite heavy but it means I can have water whenever I want not just at the stops (good if it is hot, you can wear the water 8-) ) I also hate having to carry things in my hands, I never have a problem with stopping, it's the going I have to concentrate on.

I hear ya on the water part! If you're running a full, it's a good idea to carry your own. I remember for the 1/2 in '05 it was warm, I did make it a point to stop at every water stop after mile 4, I did not want to dehydrate, I made sure to drink too, not just sip!

In order to keep going...just keep thinking about that awesome medal that's waiting for you at the finish line!!! 8-)

I just looked at the weather forecast (again). Looks like we will be running in thermal underwear underneath our running wear. This may be the coldest run I have ever done!

BTW - a trip to the doctor, some antibiotics, a decongestant and a somewhat lighter wallet, and I am starting to feel better.

breathing a little easier...

I'm starting my journey to WDW today.
What to pack, thermals? gloves?? scarfs??? waterproofs ???? :( Darn this global warming.

I was hoping for a cool low temp run, but not this cool.

I leave tomorrow and am seriously thinking of not packing any shorts. Although I think I have to just on principle! :)

Good luck to you guys running. Form what I'm told the weather is going to be perfect for running. Cool and dry. I'll be watching and cheering somewhere on the Boardwalk. Most likely with a hot cup of coffee!
